2NEW - Twister$ - An Inclusive Cowboy Hat Environment (Guest: Sara Coates)
She's back! Guest Sara Coates (@scoatesy) feels it, and she is ready to hop back in the chopper with Ben and Paul to chase it for "Twisters" (Dir. Lee Isaac Chung 2024). Starring: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Maura Tierney. In our very first "2 New" episode, we break down this brand spankin' new baby, and tame it through several minutes of engrossing chat; enough to wear out any person OR 'nado! This episode is brought to you by the Department of Redundancy Department, and that's not problematic AT ALL.

Already talked about our nickname. Yeah. So Ace, Side Saddle, and Fuck You are back. Oh, I love this. Okay.
Sorry. Go. Hi, everyone. Welcome to the review review. And if you've listened to this before, you'll know exactly what I mean when I say, you're back with sidesaddle, ace, and fuck you in the morning.
And we're here for a review review too new for Twisters. And guess who we have back? Side saddle, Sarah Coates. Side saddle is here, and it feels right. It feels good.
I'm home? Yeah. She in Oklahoma. She came locked and loaded with cowboy hats. I did.
I did. It was fucking great. 3 of them. I felt like we needed it. Something happens to me when I put a cowboy hat on.
I love an inclusive cowboy environment, and I feel that is what we have here. Oh, thank you. I also think, if you go to our Instagram review x two podcast, maybe you'll see a photo of us You know or a few. Did I step into a Twisters simulation experience? Maybe.
So you have to check out the Instagram to know if that happened. And the first question was, do you think my cowboy hat will fly off? And almost all of us are like, almost certainly. And then you'll see the results of that. But the main thing that I wanna cut to is we're gonna cut to the chase a lot in this episode is in a 2 new episode, essentially what we're gonna do is we're just gonna blast through the movie.
Yeah. That's that's mostly what we wanna get to. This movie is very, very new. It just came out a few days ago. And so So spoilers.
I think it goes without saying This is a spoiler alert. This is a podcast as spoilers. So if you haven't watched the movie, go watch the movie, come listen to this. Yeah. Go see the fucking movie.
Tornado alert. Absolutely. Not a celebration. Not a celebration. I'm not adding any sound effects to that.
Was that your Donald Duck Duck Duck Duck? That's that's not my Donald Duck Duck. Thank you very much. Phony Duck Duck Duck. Hello.
That's what you learned. Suffer that. That's how that's what you learned with your Donald Duck rings. I don't think it sounds like a duck. I think it sounds like a tornado siren, but, you know, credit is a creep.
Phony sirens. Hello. I guess ducks can't be tornado sirens. Absolutely not. I didn't see a duck in this film.
I did see a chicken. I did see a chicken. There was a chicken. No cows. Listen to the chickens, people.
No cows. Know. But they did respect animals more in this one, I felt like. But we agree. There was a mention of a cow, like, hey.
Guess you're better than a cow. Yeah. So they made sure to make sure that cows were still omnipresent in the franchise. Mother, I'm really reaching. So we throw out essentially all of our normal stuff, stuff, the 7 years, the how long is this, and all that shit, and we just dig in.
And on that note, Sarah. I'm doing great. I'm doing better now that I have been to a theater. I haven't been to a theater since I saw Iron Claw and got a babysitter. And so now we're back in the theater, and it felt right.
And this was the perfect movie to come back with. We have in the hands of Nicole Kidman. Oh my god. Let me just nuzzle into that suit that's been striped bosom. So I wouldn't be able to relax though because it's so sparkly.
It's so sparkly. She's so sparkly. That's true. Charisma. She has to do nothing.
And I'm like, yes. I'll take what you're selling. I'm great. I went to the mid state fair this weekend, so I was, like, prepping for this film around a lot of cowboys. I saw a rodeo.
So here we are. Very apropos. I love it. Very apropos. Ben.
Yeah. How you been doing? I'm doing good. I'm still in the throes of prepping for my short film, Roughways, which as we're talking about, cowboys, there's, there's a western. I I don't know when this will air if our if our fundraiser will still be live.
But 4 to 5 days from now, so I believe so. It will be. We're at 60% as of this recording. We need to hit 80% to get our money. So if you are interested, follow us at roughwaysfilm on Instagram and go to our Seed and Spark and give us a just a follow on Seed and Spark actually helps a lot because Seed and Spark then, like, throws us into their algorithm more.
But, we're close and, I've never directed a film at this level. And so, you know, I wrestle with constant insecurity, makes sense, way too much confidence. So that's where I'm miss Robinson. And I did see him in a cowboy hat and he looks great in one. So Accurate.
If that says anything. I will be on screen briefly in this, though you won't see my face. Little cameo? Yeah. I like that.
It's gonna be amazing. Yes. And we're shooting in, like, a month. In Washington state? Yeah.
In Washington state. Hell, yeah. I call it a northwestern. Is that a little tweak? Yeah.
Paulie? Me? I'm doing alright. We on Friday, Ben and I went and saw what will be a future former guest soon that has been over a year in the making. But we went to Dustin De Leon's kinda like disco funk yacht rock international show over at the fable.
Also saw former guest and future guest, Chris Olds. That was such a wonderful time. And been watching the gearing up for the Olympics. So I don't wanna talk about what I've been watching necessarily, but I get excited for the Olympics. I also just wanna for that.
The listeners, you probably hear fans and air conditioning, and it's hot. So fuck you. You're gonna have to deal with it. Deal with it. So, you know We just learned a lot about climate change, people.
Yes. Okay? Well, that technically means we should actually turn everything off. Yeah. But, but allow us our comforts.
You know? I'm a creature of comfort. Yeah. I'm kinda the same to a degree. Yeah.
So Just get a sip of my coffee really quick. Our Starbucks coffee. Oh. Yeah. Not a sponsor.
The cup is recyclable. Fuck god. I feel terrible. Hey, I have a straw. Somebody tell me what you're watching, please.
I had mine locked and loaded. Go please. I've been reading. Books? And 2 books that I've seen in your mind.
It's like theater than watching. Yeah. You read the words and then they appear in your head, and then you, like, color in the photos. Imagine that. Woah, woah, woah.
Back up, back up. But I read 2 books well, I'm reading 1 book and I read one book that Paul recommended that both these books have connections to the movie we just saw. The first one being what's the name of the book? Joyful Life of the Trauma written by Twister's cameo Oh, no. Not that Paul Scheer.
Paul Scheer. Paul Scheer, yes. Oh my gosh. Which was really great. Thank you for loaning it to me.
Oh my god. Yeah. I love that part. I got my brother into reading it. Yeah.
I need to read that. It's great. It's tough at moments, but he he he has his iconic levity of telling these, like, really fucked up things from his past. And I think it's pretty universally relatable and I especially related to a lot of especially having divorced parents at a young age. So anyway, I read that and I'm in the middle of reading Eruption, which is a new book written by Michael Crichton.
What an odd thing to say. Who's been dead for a long time. Who's been dead since 2008. But also was part of the story writer of the first twister Mhmm. Which is why I'm connecting it here.
Oh my gosh. My life. Look at all these like a twister. But, yeah, he's he researched this book for, I guess, like 20 years. It's about Mauna Loa, the biggest volcano in the world.
I didn't know that. And his wife had been holding on to all this research for a long time and was waiting for someone to come along to fill in the gaps. And so James Patterson picked up the reins and the rains. And, and yeah, it's great. It's like, you know, classic Creighton science action.
And as I'm reading it, it was like last week, Sony won the bidding war like immediately for the film rights. They greenlit it immediately, directed by the, Naiad directors. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
They also did Free Solo, the documentary, and starring Keanu Reeves. Okay. So yeah. That's a win win win. Sarah, what have you been watching?
I have been watching rewatching for the thousandth time, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oh. You just you know, it's maybe like once every year I have to dive back in and Yeah. Do the entire series. Again, I have a small child and it's hard to watch things, but her and I have also made our way through all the Shrek movies.
Nice. And the Fuss and Boots movies. Hell, yes. I have not seen the first Shrek probably since, like, 2,002, and it's funny. Yeah.
It's really funny. Funny. I had a blast. There wasn't anything too weird. 10 out of 10.
I've been wanting to go back to those. I gotta go back. I wanted to go back to those and Kung Fu Panda because I feel like I didn't ever give Kung Fu Panda much I like that franchise. Credit. Yeah.
At least the first three I thought were all pretty solid. Yeah. Shrek 4? Great. That's what I've never seen it.
Stilt skin. Yeah. And it is very much like it's a wonderful life. Like, when a shark was not born and then what happened to, happily ever after. So I'm into that.
Yeah. It was good. I still gotta watch Puss in Boots' Last Wish. I was saying this earlier that it's like, I'm that's moving up to number 1 on my priority list at this point. Maybe we should stop the podcast.
I will tell you. I I do have the 4 k. Good to know. Happy to borrow that. Yeah.
Long term, short term, however you wanna dice it. Yeah. What are you watching, Paul? What are you watching? Me?
Well, I'm gonna do my very best to be brief, especially because I'm gonna catch some strays from people. I watched what I could of the acolyte. It's a Star Wars series on Disney plus. I thought I came to the full realization ultimately when I watched most of the Obi Wan series that this was maybe not for me anymore for all sorts of reasons. And former guest, Zach Zoschke, you gotta watch the acolyte.
You gotta watch the acolyte for a 1000000 different reasons. And I did not get too far into it before. I was just kinda like, no. Not for me. I don't think so.
Star Wars, good, great, wonderful. Mostly, I just I feel like it's not for me, and they're taking it in a lot of directions that I'm not super interested in that still mostly have to do with the Jedi who are people that I think are not super cool or nice. So that's where I'm at with that. I love this. Didn't make it super long into it, walked away.
It I feel like a lot of Star Wars now has tried to become so broadly appealing that it's lost me. Maybe that's what it is. Who's to say? But that's what I've been watching. I heard Anakin, isn't it?
I don't think I got that far. I'm sorry. No. It's okay. You're not spoiling anything for this is a spoiler episode.
I'm I'm not gonna finish it. I'm not. I feel like that's a rabbit hole we can't go down. Okay. Great.
Let's not. Let's close the lid and just leave that bunny down there until you don't need to talk about it. Yeah. Okay. But we should talk about a little movie, a little tiny film that we all saw.
Paul, would you do the honors? I would love to. Archaeology is the the search for facts. You like good times and noodle salad? Today, we all went to the AMC Prime and saw Twisters.
This is an Amblin Universal Pictures Warner Brothers Pictures joint venture. It's rated PG 13. It was released this year, the year of our lord, 2024, and it's 2 hours and 2 minutes. The budget on this film is $155,000,000. Opening weekend was this weekend, July 192024.

It's not sidesaddle? You know what? I think it's just a serencoats. It was unclear. But my you should follow my husband's because he has made, like Oh, I do follow him.
150 Reviews. Yeah. Reviews. Yeah. And his is at kapler m k a p p l e r m.
And his are I'll remember that. Wonderful and hilarious. And I'm very he you changed his life. Because I didn't know what it was when I came on this podcast, and then I told him about it. And he I'll he'll wake up in the middle night, and he's making, like, lists, and it's Yeah.
It's wonderful. Letterboxd, are you hearing this? Are you gonna are you fucking listening and, tell him to go see this in the theater? Oh, I've already I texted him, I love you in the theater. I'm like, you we have to Job well done.
Yeah. I'll take care of the baby. You go watch Twisters. Yeah. Yeah.
I don't think I even caught that you texted him in the movie. Good job. I do it under my shirt. Alyssa Wilkinson for the New York Times recommends this film. Rotten Tomatoes, this is a 78.
It's a 92 audience score. Metacritic, 65. Ben? Yeah. Talk about people.
This movie was directed by Lee Isaac Chung. He did Lucky Life, Abigail Harm, and Minari. The writers are Markel Smith who did The Revenant. You'll know him. You'll love him.
Joseph Kosinski, Tom Cruise's man. He did Prom. Legacy as well as, we all know he was the director of top gun maverick. He sure was. And then you have a Michael Crichton and Anne Marie Martin for characters from the original Twister.
Directors of photography, Dan Mindle, Mission Impossible 3. Good Good looking movie. Spy Game. I like that movie. Star Trek Into Darkness.
Music, Benjamin Walfish? Walfish? Walfish? I think you got it. The Invisible Man from 2020.
Was movie I saw last movie I saw before lockdown. Same. Me too. The same. It was the same.
You're in the trifecta. Oh my god. Mortal Kombat. I got it. It's so much from 2021.
It's one of the only few movies that I've watched and then immediately put on for a second time. No way. It two times in a row. So I've seen it one time, the new one. Yeah.
And the main thing, say what you will about Louis Tan, main guy's acting talents or whatever. You throw a shirt on that guy? A fake shirt? Why? Why?
What? Why? And he also made up a character, right? Yeah. I think it was a new character.
That sounds totally wild, but I just got a frickin' blast. The fights and the music are great. And Johnny Cage is gonna be in the next one. Yeah. He's the big he's the big dude in the next Urban.
Yes. Hey. Yeah. I love Karl Urban. I do like Johnny Cage.
Yeah. Me too. So where was I? Oh, and the the Flash, which You were trying to forget. You were trying to skip that shit.
Don't worry. Trying to skip it. Yeah. Netflix reminds me every day that movie still exists. Producers, many, many people.
So many. 2 of them are Frank Marshall, Congo, and you know him, you love him, Stevie Spielberg. Whoo. Daisy Edgar Jones played Kate Pond Life Fresh from 2022, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Under the Banner of Heaven is where I saw her. Oh god.
Yeah. TV. Horrifying murder sex Mormon cult. Yeah. For, TV show.
Glenn Powell plays Tyler, Hidden Figures, Hitman, Top Gun, Maverick, Anthony Ramos plays Javi in the Heights, A Star is Born from 2018, and Transformers Rise of the Beasts which is Paul's favorite movie from this year. Keep going. You bet. Brandon Peria, plays Boone, Dance Camp, American Insurrection. Nope.
Mara Turney, love seeing her back. Kathy, semi pro, liar liar, insomnia, Harry Hayden Patton plays Ben, About Time, and Downton Abbey for the movie and the series. And my friend, Katie O'Brien Oh, yeah. Plays Danny. Yeah.
And I met her via Z Nation, but she was also in, the recent Love Lies Bleeding. She's killing it. I can't wait to see that. I'm so excited to see that. It's now available to, like, stream on peak hour.
Yeah. I saw that. She's incredible. And she's probably one of the nicest humans you've ever met in your life. Yeah.
Again, so many we're getting all the connections here. Right. Did she have, like, a fucking amazing time working on this movie? I assume. It looks so fun to me.
Here at a stoplight. I did send her a text. Nice. Good. It was absolutely incredible.
I loved every second of it, bravo. I know we'll get into this in a second, but, like, the filling out of the world with the character actors, just like in the first one, yeah, chef's kiss. Incredible. They did it. I'm gonna do my best to not say shit right now.
Okay. I'm gonna say it too. It's so hard. The whole time after this movie, we were just like, nobody talk. Yeah.
Yeah. Paul and I We couldn't stop. Paul and I were peeing next to each other and no one said anything. No. Wow.
Do you guys usually We just looked at each other. We usually do that little, like, finger thing that they do in the beginning. Then the tornado. The tornado. Yeah.
If you feel it With your fingers. Sorry. Paul's a 2 parter guy. What? We already got the funnest fact, but if you wanna give us some of the fun facts.
I would love to give you some some fun facts. Fun facts. Fun facts, everybody. It's fun fact time. Actor, writer, and podcast host, and husband of June Diane Raphael, and he's the podcast host of How Did This Get Made, Paul Scheer appears as the traffic controller in this film.
Mister Scheer is, you know, best known actually for owning 111 copies of 12,000,000,000 to send his apology to the DVD. Where do you think he stores those? That's a weird thing. I don't know. Does he get them as gifts?
Something like that. Or do you I love to keep this, don't they? Face off is my favorite Halloween episode. You can watch them. It's it's classic.
Face off. I love all the Fast and the Furious ones with Oh my god. Adam Scott. And he comes in and it's just it's truly love it. Time cop.
There's so many things. The Madame Web one is a classic. It's so good. I haven't I haven't listened yet, but I I need to because it is. It's such a bad movie.
It's the worst movie I've ever seen besides obsess or disbeliever. Like, I was like Oh, you're the trifecta. Yeah. I'm with you. Truly, I couldn't I could the dubbing of that one character was Oh, my lord.
Spoke a line in the movie? No. No. No. Absolutely.
Paul Paul fell asleep. Did oh, I fell asleep at Madame Web. That's why it's like I can't speak to its crappiness or greatness of crappiness. Theater? No.
I was here with Ben and I was just like on the couch? I just asked out. I I I let my intrusive thoughts win. The next fun fact is in honoring the original, this was shot entirely on Kodak 35 millimeter film in Oklahoma. That's awesome.
And it looked beautiful. Director Lee Isaac Chung said that a large part of this decision came from wanting to capture the natural vibrant colors of the state. And guess what? It worked. I will add Mission accomplished.
Went to a climate summit film summit conversation and they had a whole panel on this. And they had, Lee Isaac Chung's from Arkansas. And so, he really wanted to capture how that area of the country, but also, like, how impactful this climate change is happening in in that area. As well as they had numerous people on board of the story and the script and on set that were tied directly to, like, storm chasing. Oh, a lot of, like, the people who were, yeah, like, kind of filler in the community of tornado people.
Well, and apparently Jess was saying that after the First Twister there was a big rise in amateur storm chasers that caused a lot of deaths. Yes, it did. And so that's why they reference, like, at the beginning of this scene, all these, like, people who just have iPads who are going out into the middle probably don't do that? No. No.
No. No. No. This is for professionals' friends. So, yeah, anyway.
Maybe my favorite fun fact is Glenn Powell's dog, hot brisket, amazing name, appears in the movie as both the official cast member and Where does he appear in the movie? Official set mascot. And guess what? I did not see him. I didn't see him either.
I was gonna I thought he was gonna be the Did he get cut? Dog that gets saved. He might have gotten cut. Maybe or he's, like, somewhere we didn't catch him. How do you tell your dog that you got cut out of the movie?
That's a hard conversation. Yeah. Stay safe. Okay. We're gonna do this a little different than usual.
We're all gonna kind of take a stab at the log line of this movie. I'm horrible at log lines. So you guys go first, so I can get a little This movie is brought to you by the beautiful vibrant colors of the southern Midwest South. Mhmm. Yes.
Southern Midwest South. Yes. Arkansas, Oklahoma. The Department of Redundancy Department. Yeah.
We see it. It's brought to you by the Department of Redundancy Department. Oh I got it. Yeah, I got it. Alright, I got it.
Go for it. I got it. You got your, you got your I think I got a stab. No, I got the sponsor. I got it.
Okay, I got it. Do you got it? I got it. He's got it. This town's a part of us all.
A part of us all. A part of us all. It'll help you remember. Okay. My log line.
Group of misfit storm chasers assemble for great calling by stopping nature from its natural process, and that will have no effect on anything, it's totally fine. Love it. Okay. I hate it as well. Mine?
Yeah. Or I'll go. I don't care. I'll make it up on the spot. A young scientist storm chaser attempting to stop tornadoes experiences a traumatic event when losing most of her team returns to the game and teams up with a wild, YouTube storm chasing star.
Together, they take on God. Fuck you, God. It's me, Ace. I was trying to From a side saddle and fuck you. We were saying that to you, God.
To me, the core conflict. Right? Yeah. Sure. Mine is going to be twisters.
Capitalism versus pure heart. Will someone kiss in the middle of a tornado? I hope so. I hope so too. You know what's funny?
That would be so hot. When you said that, Jess sent me an article. Like, literally, right when you said that, she sent me an article that said Steven Spielberg suggested Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones don't kiss in Twisters. That's fucking crazy. The Illuminati, the algorithm, it's all falling apart.
I thought it was a it felt very purposeful to be like, this is the beginning of a relationship. They're not like we don't need to see, like, a big old smooch. And I actually and I did want them to smooch in the middle of a tornado. Like I wanted somebody to anyway. I wanted them to full on fuck, to be honest.
I just wanted them to see it. I wanted to see it. Because when you're in a tornado, no one on the outside can see you, so it's really private. Just the tornado do the work, man. Yeah.
Yeah. Shit. Strapped to a bar. Yeah. Yeah.
You just have to look down. Just don't drill the truck down. It's like a Mormon thing. Do the drill thing. Jump on the bed.
Yeah. Soaking. Soaking. Yeah. But this is a tornado.
I hate the idea of soaking so much. It's just sex. I don't know what we're all But I don't like the term soaking or fluid bonding. We should take a break, though. I was gonna say, could you imagine being in that Mormon murder show, like, D.
A. Z. Edgar Jones and how much you hate something? The log line to this film is a retired tornado chaser and meteorologist is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technology. Okay.
I mean, it doesn't talk about Glenn Powell, but okay. I mean, it's rude. Kinda shitty of you guys. Yeah. Just saying kinda shitty of you guys.
If you think about it, it's kinda shitty of you guys. Alright. Department of redundancy department. By the department of redundancy. Department.
Department. The department of redundancy. Part of the joke. Yeah. Okay.
Got it. Department. Department of redundancy department. Yeah. Hey, everybody.

With another person. What's that called? I don't know. That's the movie that I choose. I think you get to go first.
Absolutely. I could absolutely go first. I'll I'll say The Recruit in honor of John O'Mott. Oh, yeah. Sarah.
I'm so sorry. I Don't have a buddy. We also already talked about we talked about Insomnia already. So We did oh. It's on the list.
Okay. Well, I should know, like, every Al Pacino movie. Give me a couple more so I can just go, yeah. Oh. Oh.
I'm out. I'm tapped. You're tapped? I haven't I didn't extend my brain to think of more. Oh, okay.
Good. Oh, I didn't either. Mine either. Oh my god. So my review of the movie?
Jack and Jill. Whatever. There you go. I think we'll just jump right into your first initial reaction of the movie. A monster movie.
Totally. I took it and ran with it. And just like because we discussed this in the last episode talking about Twister. It and you made me think of it even more of this this just monster coming and chasing you. And the big things that popped out to me were, like, the fire nado when there was actually, like, fire in a tornado and they were shooting, like, we were just seeing the monster grow in a way.
And I most of the movie, I was, like, crumpled up, except for miss Soglin Powell in a white wet t shirt and a cowboy hat. Thank you very much. And I went, eee. I mean, that's the monster I wanna chase. Oh, hello.
If you if you feel it, Jason. It had to be said once. It had to. I loved it so much. But, yeah, I just I love a ragtag group of people doing good, and it I feel like everyone was so well cast.
We were talking about just this character actor of the movie just like the first one, just this group of weirdos that are making a difference. I had a blast. Like we said earlier, I didn't see hot brisket in it, and that was my only negative right off the bat. I was like, where's this dog? We're hunting for this dog.
I don't see this dog. Yeah. Yeah. I need a close-up on this dog. I need to be so close that I can almost, like, smell his, like, Frito y face.
It was AMC Prime. Yeah. How excited are you for dog pool? Oh my god. That ugly tongue that sticks out all the time is probably dry.
Yeah. Just because it's always sticking out of his mouth. I can't wait. I wanna get him. But, yeah, I had a I had a blast.
Glenn Powell, his charisma is like humidity. Like, it's just It's really strong. It's thick. Yeah. And I wanna walk right through it.
Great teeth. The air's thick. You can feel it. It's heavy. It's heavy.
Yeah. And he's he's talented. You know? He's so talented. Yeah.
He's a movie star. He's a fucking movie star. Period. I'm gonna say it. I don't think we've had, like, a movie star movie star in quite a while where you see the person, you're like, I would go see a movie because it's a Glenn Powell movie.
Yeah. I heard this on another podcast. They were talking about, like because a lot of the people that we point to and say, like, well, what about this one? What about that one? You talk about Chris Hemsworth.
And it's, like, yeah. But do you like Chris Hemsworth or do you like Thor? Yeah. Because if you look at the budget if you look at the box office, it's Thor. People like Thor.
Yes. And same with like Chris Evans. Like Chris Evans is a fine actor but do you like do you think Chris Evans is a movie star or do you like Captain America? Right. Right.
And I think that for Glenn Powell, because he has I think smartly not tied himself to a franchise like that, he is able to bounce around and and kind of play more character he wants or or lead him in roles, whatever he wants. And I loved it. So it's like a 5? Yes. I would like to give it 5 hot briskets.
Wow. I, you know, I had a freaking blast. To me, it's a great popcorn movie, but also I cried. Mhmm. Oh, wow.
She had real tears. Okay. The scene in the pool where they're holding it and where they're holding on and there's a and maybe because it was like a mother and a daughter saying, like, you're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay. But then she heard her boyfriend who passed, saying you're gonna be okay, and I was just taken.
Yeah. It's me. I had such a great time watching this movie. Everything in terms of we're gonna shoot this on film for a million reasons really fucking works. I actually disagree with the 2 of you about the monster movie thing.
It feels like less of a monster movie to me. Yeah. I mean, more less than the original show. It feels less like the these things are driven by people's individual emotion and stuff like that. And a lot of the changes that were made because this is more of, like, a reboot or a remake or a redo or a reimagining than it is a sequel.
A lot of the changes they made are good. It, like, grounds the movie in ways. It Yeah. I think they they did a great job. It's, like, written with a fairly deft hand.
It adds the right amount of levity at the right time. As you both were saying, like, a lot of the surrounding characters, like, really tie the room together, where it's, like, the reporter, Ben, and Mora Tierney is the mom, and Paul Sheer. And I like I really like the storm chaser with the ragtag group, the guy with the glasses that, like, is low key. Like, he's he's apparently, like, crazy super smart Yeah. Or whatever.
There are a lot of people that have roles that are meant to paint fill in the the painting, and the painting is vibrant and detailed and pretty and whatever. I'm pretty sure the first one I gave a 3 with a heart where it's like, this is a disaster movie. Almost every disaster movie has a little heart next to it. The big difference I think between this and a lot of disaster movies I watch Armageddon or Twister or Towering Inferno or whatever, but Armageddon specifically, you know, somebody Bruce Willis makes a speech. He's like, yeah.
These boys are great up in space and doing this and that and whatever, but they don't know jack shit about drilling. And it's like, shut the fuck up. What are you talking about? Yeah. And so I think Ben Affleck, says something along those lines.
I'm gonna take the little heart off because I just feel like this movie is better than having the little heart applied to it anymore. And I'm gonna go from a 3 to a 3a half. And similar to Ben, there is something so special about a 3a half star movie that's really good. Yeah. Where it's like, oh, I feel like I can float in and out or, like, this is a safe place for me or whatever it is.
I'm gonna give it 3 and a half drills. I can't help but give it like, when that truck drills down Those are very cool. It's cool. It's a cool it's a cool thing. And that's the thing about this one compared to the first one too, original, the first imagining.
This one feels a little bit cooler. Like, a little bit sleeker. Yeah. Like, and again, in a good way. It's not a good, bad movie or whatever.
It's just a good movie. Yeah. Yeah. I fully agree. I think, like, when the movie started, I was a little I was maybe at, like, a 3, like, in the first kind of sequence because it felt very, like, I've, like, always seen this before.
Right? Like, with the overpass and everything, I was like, oh, it's Man of Steel. And, like, we could probably see it coming that these people were going to perish as, like and then I really came around. I think that the script is really, really smart in terms of what it's in terms of its themes. Like, thematically, I think everything really works.
They don't have to say that Tyler is just in this for the likes or for the you know, but, you know, that's kind of what his character is and then comes around to realize, oh, maybe like, they really paint that ragtag group, Tyler's group, as the villains and, like, the at the beginning and then having it was a nice reversal for the Cary Elwes sort of, like, clean, Ellis sort of like clean, uniformed, were the heroes and then going deeper into learning more about like, oh, what's the funding behind this? What and that Yeah. Follow the money and you'll find out. And find these people are, you know, coming in and buying up property at a very low price after it's been destroyed, which is a true thing. Mhmm.
Jess was telling me all about it in Maui. Like that happened down there. It's a 100% true. And I thought that just the the the two leads, their, their charisma, and the draw the drive they have for one another, but also just the drive they have for the the game, the chase, the fun, and then realizing that they can help. The last or one of the last moments, and obviously spoilers, and Jess was saying this too in the car, it's like the 3 men are in the theater and all they can do is watch her go like, well, I'm gonna do it myself.
And you know she would. And you know she would do that. And it doesn't feel out of character. It doesn't feel stupid. It feels like at this point you've run out of options.
All these people are going to die and she's like, this is literally the only choice. It doesn't feel like a shoehorn at all. It's written really well. And I think those gender reversals would have been like in the nineties, right, they would have reversed that. And I like that she kind of has a 6th sense that kind of like Bill Paxton had.
It feels like it is in conversation with the first one, with the reference to Dorothy and all this stuff without having to directly nostalgically pull at any heartstrings that way. Mhmm. You know, we don't need a Helen Hunt cameo. No. No.
So I think we I got a new blonde, same as the old blonde. Yeah. Not really. So for me, for me, I'm gonna go it's a 4 Dodge Rams. I don't know why I really wanna buy a Dodge Ram.
You got no idea why. I'm not sure why, but I really I think I'm gonna buy a Dodge Ram. That's the enduring legacy of of the Twister universe is the Dodge Ram. Yeah. I don't know why.
That's a really good rating system. Feels like I should just go buy 1 I think or 2. You would you would fit really well in a Dodge Ram. Thank you. But you can't put the little drills on the bottom because otherwise, it wouldn't have gotten how many people are gonna go to their car, like, dealership and be like, can I get it with the drills?
Like, that's not a thing. That's not a thing. That's not real. No. That's really dangerous.
We can't that, sir. We can't do that for you. Well, I feel like there's a there were a lot of moments in this movie that could have been, like, shoving it down our throats, and especially, like, even some of the lines in the script showing how well it was directed. Because nothing nothing popped out to me as going, oh, cringe or cheesy or any Yeah. And it all felt very realistic.
There were a couple moments when Glenn Powell just it was just so sweet when when the, reporter was taking a picture of Daisy's character and he said, I need a copy of that. And it was just so like you're setting up these little nuggets of this relationship that might happen that we don't get to see, but that's kind of exciting because then I can just think about this relationship. Hollywood relationship. Right. I agree.
Of them, I think, are strong enough actors Yeah. That those scenes that they could play didn't feel hammed up or, like, oh, I'm so into you and all that. It was, like, we're just talking about the science of this Yeah. And we have a lot in common. Yeah.
And it well, and it the movie takes place over what? 3 or 4 days approximately? I think she goes away. Approximately a week. Yeah.
But and that's the thing is, like, over the course of a week, 2 adults that have been through god only knows what based on the history that we know of them. And, also, she is rightfully, you know, extremely cagey considering what she's, like, gone through, and he has to kinda peel her like an onion. Like, this is gonna take some time, and that feels right. It never if the kiss thing happened, it would have felt so forced and out of place. I mean, did I want it to happen?
Absolutely. Of course. I wanted to see the plot twist. Yes, but you're right. It would have felt forced.
Well, in every thing building up to the last moment was purpose. Like, I love that in the first Twister that we are trying to track and detect, Twisters, which at that time felt like maybe science fiction and now is something that you can pretty do that you can do pretty well is like try to track them, which is they're doing in this movie. And taking that and then elevating it to like now we gotta stop them Yeah. I think is just a really smart script move. A a lot of the way they kinda changed the pseudoscience and real science and with the way that they applied things and wove them in, like, it all really mostly worked for me.
Yeah. Like, all these people are smart people Yes. Seemingly. Like And a lot of the time, and this is this is gonna sound bad, but when I see a beautiful person person talking about science, I will think I don't believe you. Like, I don't have any of a word you were saying.
Yeah. But when they were in that barn just discussing tornadoes and the science behind the tornadoes, I was like, I believe you. I don't know what you're talking about, but I believe you. Yeah. And I love that, like, the, what were they called, the other group, the, like, polished group?
Storm Lab? Storm? Storm Par. Storm Par. Par.
I love that, like, they needed their data Yes. To feed into their model to, like, full like, I love that all those pieces came together and that Anthony Ramos character gets that arc of coming back around. We didn't mention Superman, David Cornswet. Yeah. Pretty much goes into that Cary Elwis, part.
But but even more so because he clearly like, we talked about it in the Twister episode. Kary Elis literally wasn't, like, he was kind of a dick, but he wasn't, like, malintentions. No. David Cornsweat's like an actual villain who knows what his father's doing and is supportive of it and, like, the whole deal. Was his father his uncle or Father oh, yeah.
Family member is taking advantage of people that are losing their homes and that's because he even says I don't care about the people. Right. He had that line. Straight up. I was like, fuck this guy.
Yeah. So this was my, I guess, my thing that I was like, about it. My favorite scene in the movie, favorite character in the movie probably was more tyrannies. Kathy is the mother character. Seen her come back.
She's always great. She's never had a bad moment of a performance in her entire career that I can think of. She's amazing. There was a mention of a visit coming back to see mom before the end of the movie Oh, yeah. Which didn't happen.
Got cut. And their and maybe it was during the credits that I missed, but there were a it's like David Korn this movie disposes of a lot of people. Yeah. Like, a pretty good amount of I'd say probably 20 people die in this movie. And the one person who doesn't seem to get, like, a comeuppance or whatever is the the only, like, active bad guy, which was kind of odd.
It's not good or bad. It's just like I don't understand that choice. I did think that maybe the last, like, the giant one in the, like, the movie theater, the town they're going to Yeah. Because the guy that maybe that was gonna be her hometown Yeah. And that maybe her mom was gonna be in the path or in the town or something.
Something like that. I thought that that might they might tie that together, which might have been too much. Yeah. But To me, it's stronger that she just wanted to save people. You know?
Yeah. Like, the the and if she did that because she was trying to save her mom, her childhood home, or her mom's, I think that that would have seemed selfish and that there was this really beautiful idea that she was kinda selfless in this in this, you know Yeah. Which is definitely better than the first. I'm gonna say it right now. This movie's better than the first one.
Yes. But I think like the first one, remember they're like, oh, it's headed right towards that town, and then there's no phone. They don't think Remember they don't make a phone call? They just have to go and like help after people. This one's more about helping people.
It's not so much about state chasing. Yes. Right. Yeah. Was anybody else kind of, I don't know how to put this.
Maybe somebody else should talk. Hard? Hard. Boners. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Boners.
Lots of boners. Yeah. That was why why why I had an f 5. Is that what you're hearing? I don't know if you heard me.
Yeah. Boners. Full 5. But the Daisy Edgar Jones' motivation to save people makes perfect sense, especially based on the first scene in the movie where every all her friends are killed, and she's dealing with this trauma and wants to make up for Yeah. This whole thing.
But the motivation is also kind of lost to a degree where it's like, oh, we need to track these tornadoes to did anybody else feel like it's like well, even though we didn't know at that point, I don't think that these guys are trying to track these natives, like, the tornadoes. No. No. Gotta keep trying them. For nefarious means, essentially.
But wouldn't it have been really important for her to be when when dude's like they're trying to catch a nada or whatever and get this data and one of the satellites flies off, and she's like, we have to go help the people right now. And it's like, how big of a diversion would it have been to get that in that extremely valuable information to track this or prevent it from happening again? Would that 15 or 20 minutes happen? Talking about the thing that got sucked into the tornado? Yeah.
And he's like, we gotta get it before the battery dies. And she's like, no. We have to go help people now. I feel like that thing was gone. But also, like He said it was still alive.
Also okay. The battery's gonna die. Send one of your 5 other trucks while we pop over into That too. Isn't it gonna get, like, thrown into the ground and, like, destroyed? He said that the battery was still alive.
The GPS was running. I mean, I guess, you know, like, there's so many things that I just kind of like, the pseudoscience you're saying are, like Yeah. The idea that if you drive into a tornado, there's not just like random giant debris that's gonna take your truck out. Like, I get that if you can, like, drill in and the wind's not gonna pick it up. But like But you're gonna get hit and I You have to go along with it.
Giant piece of Metal that ripped off of a house, you know, that has a lot of glass that's gonna go through glass. What is that? Bulletproof glass? Like, do we have tornado proof glass here? I was thinking that when she drew I was like, someone's gonna hit the windshield.
And then the cars just kinda like slowly roll. And I was like, oh, I don't think this is true. But Yeah. It's fun. It's fun.
Sometimes just like the stakes don't feel super high, I guess, is what I keep coming at. I think it I think it vacillates Yeah. Between being really high and being like, oh, you can get out of the car, it's fine. And you're like, wait, hold on. When you get out of the car, you vacillate.
Being really high? And maybe I can get out of the car. Okay. What? You mean like when you get pulled over?
No comment. No comment. Yeah. So, I mean, but I am okay with that because Yeah. Like you were saying, Sara, like, the movie Jess and I were saying, like, it felt like a true cinema popcorn Yes.
A crowd pleaser. Yeah. We only wanted to do. You know? Like, the only thing I can compare it to, and it's not you know, I I think Top Gun Maverick for me is a 5 star, but, like, Top Gun Maverick was, like Yeah.
Felt that way too. I watch it, like, every other week. Crowd pleaser. Crowd pleaser. Wow.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm I'm a crowd that wants to be pleased. I mean Yes.
And And I went through many emotions. I laughed. I cried. Yeah. I I jumped.
I made a couple jump scares that I was not prepared for. I thought the, special effects were incredible. Great. The special effects were so Great. Good.
We, especially me, dog on effects a good amount on this program. And something this movie does so well aside from shooting on film is a lot of the effects are either in the background Mhmm. Or moving really fast, and they're not trying to throw cows or, like, deep deep even more detailed shit in there all the time. And so, like, it all fucking plays so well. Yeah.
And even when, like, in that first scene, when if we're going back to monster movie, like, the tornado literally pulling them like something's pulling your feet back. Yeah. There were just these scary moments where I was like, please go forward. Please go forward. And they were just, like, clawing to stay alive, but they absolute they didn't.
And it was just I it scared me so much, and I really loved that scene. And the mixture of practical and Yes. Like Pretty practical. Yeah. Absolutely.
Yeah. Like the movie theater, what a cool and Jess was just telling me that that was a real picture someone took after a tornado was the like, in a movie theater seeing the screen get ripped out and the rest of the movie was around, which is what Lee Isaac Chung wanted to capture. We were talking about go ahead. Oh, no. Frankenstein.
Oh, yeah. Okay. Yep. It was just in the first movie, it was The Shining and right when he put the ax through is when it the the tornado came through. And this time, it was because of Universal, you were saying, Paul.
It was Frankenstein. And when he was saying, it's alive. It's alive. And then it gets sucked out. And it was just I remember thinking while we were watching it.
I was like, this is perfect. This is perfect. I love this so much. This is perfect. And the sounds of the tornado were still very Oh, great.
Whatever they use. Right? When we talk about it growling. Growling. Yeah.
The I like the soundtrack. I like the score. Mhmm. Yeah. I like the audio.
I was I'm I'm on board. I'm on board too. It's a pretty complete movie. The last point I think I wanna make, tailing off of what Sarah was saying and talking about, you know, shining and Frankenstein and shit, this movie does such a good job of being like, remember that thing that you maybe noticed or didn't notice or whatever? We're gonna do our version of escalating or subverting or changing, and so much of that worked for me.
Subverting or changing, and so much of that worked for me. Yeah. Like, we talked about we talked about this a little bit with my love of Beverly Hills Cop, Axl f. I thought it was so good. And this movie does that well too where, like, you think Axl's gonna come in the desk clerk and fuck with them because that's what he does better than anybody, and right when he's about to do it, he's like, fuck it.
I'm tired. Never mind. And this movie does some of that in its own way. I don't wanna ruin any of those moments, so I'll use that other example and ruin that for you. Oh, we also got a brief cameo by Bill Paxton's son in this.
Awesome. Yeah. I I Great. He's the guy in the motel who's trying to demand the room. Oh, yeah.
Bill Paxton's son's son's son. It's an ADO. It's not a ADO. It's an ADO. RIP.
RIP. Paxton. Last thing I'll say too, there's not many actors that have been on the face of this planet that have a level of natural effortless charm that Bill Paxton has had. R I effortless charm that Bill Paxton has had, r I p. Whether it's any actor or certain performances or writing or whatever, this movie has touches levels or whatever of that charm.
I'm almost, like, giving myself chills thinking about it because it's it really does have that. Yeah. Real crowd pleaser. Welcome. I'm done.
Yeah. I think I'm done too. I I'm done too. I loved it. Done.
I'm a pass. I'm sitting at 4 Dodge Ram. You're staying at 4? Oh my gosh. I am at 5, Hopkins.
At 5. It's me again with the movement. I'm going to 4. Yeah, baby. I'm going to 4 drills.
You. I'd love to drill it down. It. Chase it. And we're doing the twister finger.
We're doing the twister finger. You can't see you can't see on the on the you're just listening. But if you can but if you could see it. But we're doing it so fast that you can feel it through your ears. What a fucking crowd pleasing movie, truly.
And, god, it just does such a great job of of the thing that they did so well in the nineties of, like, you're just here to have a good time. Right? Yes. Just have a fucking good time. Yeah.
Well done. Thank you so much for coming back. Thanks for having me. Thanks for inviting me out. I just Got me popcorn and a soda?

Yeah. I was like I I I was a little weary to go through the entire episode and get to the end because I was like, oopsie. Because I was just having so much fun. We were just chatting. I was like, good, good, good.
Don't worry. We're we're, victims of that, exact Oh my god. Yes. Having so much fun talking about your favorite thing, which is the movies, and then you're like, oh my god. I had, like, 4 beers.

There you go. But just like he'll do the most obscure groupings. He will be like, grumpy adult and pro grumpy adult and precocious teen Okay. Like films. And then he'll find, like, 30 movie that have that trope.
Awesome. So he just he loves to do it. It's his OCD. Oh, like up? Yeah.
Yeah. Like, some more of what I can think of. We can You're asking me what you can think of? Yeah. Can you tell me what I can think of?
