The Game Plan / Our Superb Owl Party (Guest: Charles Norris)
First, 'Hey, Dwayne.' A Review Review, and Cornish College of the Arts favorite, Charles Norris returns. He's feeling solid in his approach to his choice, "The Game Plan." (2007 Dir. Andy Fickman) Starring: Dwayne (FKA 'The Rock') Johnson, Roselyn Sanchez, and Madison Pettis. In this installment we go head to head with the PG rating, we go long on the idea that this had more Chestnut and less cinnamon at a point, and the frustration of unfinished sto

Yes. Every time. Every fucking time. Are you guys ready? Yeah.
Alright. He's as mad as my real dad. Hello, folks, and welcome into the review review. I am your announcer, Ben. And here next to me is the hall of famer, Paul.
It's me, Marv, Paul, Albert, and I'm gonna take a bite out of this situation. If nothing else, deep cut. Hi, everyone. Hello. Welcome to the review review.
If you are joining us for the first time, thank you for being here. This is a movie podcast where we have a guest. This guest will bring us a movie that is 7 to 8 years old at least and not part of a major franchise and something they maybe wanna revisit for some reason. They'll come into the podcast with a ranking of it out of 5. We get that ranking from Letterboxd.
More on that later. And we will discuss and see if our rankings have changed. Today, we have a return guest, Cornish's chosen son, mister Charles Norris. Don't fuck with it, Chucks. It's from the black sheep down the field.
I am the black sheep. Welcome, Charles, back to the program. Oh, welcome, Charles, and welcome back. Thank you for having me back. Uh-huh.
A pleasure. Charles will be in charge of this game plan today because he brought us And our days and our nights. Yes. The game plan. So, Charles, new segment for folks for regular listeners.
Right off the bat, our first question, why the game plan? Wait. I thought we were watching the blinds blindside. Did you play a lot of tackle football? Yeah.
I also got the seats. Oh, we watched concussion replay. My bad. No. I love The Rock.
Hey, Dwayne. And with playoff football coming up and Sunday coming up, I'm thinking football movies. And what better things for me than to relive the Disney classic, The Game Plan, starring Hey, Dwayne. The Rock Johnson, who's also making us come back to wrestling as well. So it's a 2 stone for me.
A question. So this guy, The Rock Yes. And Dwayne Johnson are the same person? And people don't know this. They don't fucking look like the same person at all.
Well, not this version, though. 0%. No. This is I have no idea. This is the rock on Ozempic, I think.
Hey, Dwayne. Or before ACH. One of the times. I feel like this and like that. Before he became bolder.
Yeah. But, like, 'tis the season, it's we're in it's gonna be the Superb Owl, the big game The Superb Owl. As they call it. Number 33 in this movie. I I do have a question, though.
Why did they go with this 10 part series rather than just make, like, an 85 minute, 90 minute movie. You're you're getting ahead of yourself, Paul. We have What are you talking about? We have to get to what have you been doing? What have you been doing?
I've been watching football. Oh, sure. I've been watching playoff football. I'm gonna say that I've been very disappointed in the football that I've been watching. Oh, hot takes.
You know, since the playoffs began, I had a lot of high hopes and optimism. Of course, my team, our team, our hawks, go hawks did not make it. Seahawks football's over. 10 game For now. 10 win season is nothing to to shake a stick at.
You know? Yeah. Brand new coach, new mostly new coaching staff, a lot of new schemes. That's And almost makes things worse. It's like now you're go.
You got you get 10 wins, and you think we have a team, but no one thinks we have a team that's ready for a Super Bowl win, and that's a problem. You know, I've always felt like to a degree, the Seahawks are a bit of a poverty franchise. I'm a fan of the Portland trail I'm missing Blazers Nets. My the 12 win Portland Trail Blazers to be here. This is what I'm doing.
I just, I I don't feel like I should, as a fan, be expecting the Seahawks to be regularly competing for a Super Bowl. I feel like that was an anomaly. Does anybody feel that as well? I think there is optimism with having a new, head coach. As much as I loved Pete, I think it was time to get out of that groove.
And I do think you saw a lot of improvement on the defense this year. And I know we're becoming a football podcast, but, you know, 'tis the season. I do think that he you know, McDonald proved that he's ruthless in terms of, like, if you don't fit his scheme, if you don't if you're not the kind of player he wants, he'll he'll cut you, and he'll bring in someone who fits what he wants to do. And so I'm optimistic about the defense. On the offensive side, I have a lot of notes, but not not a long enough podcast to get to that.
Okay. Charles. Yes. What have you been doing? Wow.
Well, that's that's a toughie. Mhmm. I've also been watching a lot of football. Mhmm. And that's sort of the the basic of my doing.
There's also, you know, award seasons coming up, so it's that time where I start planning out my, my movie watch list and try to start knocking those down a little bit so I could feel like I'm somewhat informed. Life as a house. So, you know, my opinions on my bad Yeah. Are not coming straight from, the better. Okay.
Yeah. Sure. Makes a lot of sense. Or, like, random voting for things or participation in things, etcetera. Correct.
Correct. Correct. Correct. Yeah. So I alright.
I have no say, but whatever. Wow. It's like so many other things. Yeah. But I want my opinion to be heard just the same.
Yeah. Absolutely. That's why I voted for Jill Stein. Go ahead. Throw your vote away.
No. No. No. You use that voice. That's a strong powerful voice.
Absolutely. I encourage it. Me, aside from missing Blazers' nets, which I'm sure was gonna be a real enjoyable experience. I got the vinyl for the soundtrack for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 1990, and that's been, like, on a mild loop. I've been really enjoying that when cleaning or writing or editing or hanging out with the cat or whatever, but it's so good.
A movie that has no business being as incredible as it is, which I think I've voiced several times on this podcast. You're gonna get no disagreement from me. Excellent. Look. I don't wanna fight you.
Excellent. Let's hang on to this feeling. I love it. Before we just move on, I just wanna really quickly say, like, we're all connected to LA, that I know I speak for all of us, but, it's just been a really hard time to be in LA. And if you're impacted, and I'm sure everyone's impacted in some degree, but if you're greatly impacted by these fires, our heart is with you.
And, I've only been in the city for 8 years, but I can tell you this is a resilient city full of people who are hustlers and will get shit done. And so I believe that this, we will overcome. And there's so much of shit out there, so much misinformation, so much sensationalism, so much fear mongering that's happening in the media. And just being in it is so intense, but it's also uplifting to see how many people are supporting the, the everyone who was hurt, victims of the fire and, fires. So I I think I saw, very poignant meme the other day that said LA is full of production people, and trust me, we get shit done.
And the fact that, I tried to volunteer earlier and got turned away because they had too many is a testament to how many people who are just willing to, like, jump in, keep their hands a little dirty, and just, you know, we're still in the midst of it, but already ready to get to the healing process, which is amazing to be a part of despite, you know, the tragedy of it all. Well said. I'm gonna also say this is also what we've been doing. As Ben mentioned, our connection to LA and how we're spending our time. And please, as you're seeing things on the Internet, as I've had to explain to a few family members, the Hollywood sign did not burn.
Please verify GoFundMe's that you're looking at, images that you're looking at, so on and so forth. Participate, volunteer, be involved, be aware, be informed. I know that can be really difficult, but always go beyond the first or even sometimes second layer. But yeah. Okay.
What are we watching? Charles, you're in charge. Oh, and it is day and night. It's night. Yes.
Here I am. Well, I guess I've been going through my little movie list of things I need to watch, so I just got done watching, Amelia what's what's the does Zoey's Amelia. Elliott Perez. So I watched that. Yeah.
I realized I had an interesting experience as I celebrate day 1700 Duolingo where that movie is particularly a lot of in Spanish. And I found myself really understanding a lot of the movie. And then I decided to watch reviews afterwards and realized, oh, it's because there's a lot of really bad Spanish apparently happening in that movie, and it's been getting, shit. It's really dumped on as far as, a lot of the back portrayals. I had no clue.
I I enjoyed it. I I thought, and I'm like, well, maybe I'm just really dumb. But but, hey. I I I had a good time. I went down to 1 pole.
I think it's perfect for me to speak in this moment as Charles was mentioning maybe, who knows, people being really dumb. It's like if it's Emilia Perez. It's like, maybe I just like Louis Vuitton and, like, you know, fucking snappy whatever, etcetera, etcetera. Yeah. Reminders of other things.
And this movie reminded me of a couple things that a lot of people would classify as dumb that I felt like I needed to watch one of them immediately. And it was between Over the Top starring Sylvester Stallone and Little Giant starring Rick Moranis. And the coin flipped to Over the Top. And this is a movie that I adore. Ben has his hat on backward.
I respect it. I appreciate it. I will never arm wrestle you ever. It's one of those movies on my letterbox that gets the little heart because it's not some art piece or some shit like that, but it is such a great piece of entertainment. And in case anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, this is the Sylvester Stallone movie about arm wrestling across America while fighting for the custody of his son.
I think that's the best way I can sum it up. Okay. This this also begs the question, who is the favorite wrestler turned actor of everyone here? Charles? I mean, I think it has to be Dave Bautista at the moment.
I I also was gonna say Bautista. I think in terms of pure acting, I feel like he has actually come a very long way even since the first tracks. Like, I I've yeah, so I think I'll I really I dig Bautista, and I dig his vibe, man. I dig Bautista too, and he he's an actor for sure. He's really good.
I I'm a Terry Funk guy, and I was reminded of this when I watched Over the Top when he's trying to push around Stallone because he's like, no. You can't have your kid back. And he's in, Roadhouse, and he's that guy that doesn't have the temperament for the job. Gentlemen. Get the funk out.
Terry Funk, baby. I love him. Ben. Yeah. What have you been watching?
You said you didn't watch some art piece or anything, but I I watched a literal art piece, I think. It was it's the movie called Flow, the Golden Globe winning animation. Small French animation studio. Similar experience to when Paul when we saw the, Late Night with the Devil when there were so many production companies. And, like, you're, like, surely this is the movie, and it just and it just is another, like, another thing.
And it, like, starts, and they're all animated. So you're watching animated thing, and it's like, oh, flowers. Oh, is it oh, no. And it's like, You're like and it literally kept happening to the point that I turned to Jess. I was like, what is going on?
Am I am I crazy? Or, and so that aside though, that movie, Flow, is a piece of brilliance. It is Mhmm. Is beautiful. The animation is incredible.
The camerawork made me forget it was animation. Like, it felt like you were watching a handcam and the lighting. And for a movie with no dialogue, just animal sounds Oh. It's about a group of animals who are surviving a massive flood. And that's the story.
And, like Oh, wow. The main character is a cat, so, of course, I'm already in. Mhmm. But it was it was phenomenal. It was great.
It's, like, barely 90 minutes. It's harrowing. It's gripping. I was, like, worried so about and then I at the end, I just, like, openly wept. And Oh.
So, yeah, it maybe it was the movie I needed right now to, like, feel this, like, these group to coming together to survive a natural disaster, but it I I was this is a strong year for animation. I'll say that. I was gonna ask you, what where do you think you rank it right now amongst the animations? I think it takes the one spot for me. I was I mean, again, strong year.
Like, I loved Inside Out 2. I loved the Wild Robot. I loved Wallace and Gromit. Like, there are there are some some phenomenal animated pictures right now. I think especially in the PG rating.
Mhmm. G as well. But that's, like, where all the best shit lives for the last 20 plus years maybe in PG, specifically. All the best shit is that Leica, Pixar, DreamWorks, Independent Studios, the folks at Sony outside of Sony who did the Spider Verse stuff. I know that's PG 13.
But a lot of the the best PG rated stuff, I I feel is almost exclusively reserved for animation. Is flow do you know is it g or PG? I assume it's like harrowing based on, like yeah. I can't imagine it's g because it it that there were It's rough. Scary moments.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I will not get news for you, Paul, because the game plan is rated PG. Yeah.
Oh, okay. Good. It is. Alright. Well, that's a fact.
That is a fact. 20 years. Yeah. Oh, Interesting. Well, it's almost like I put the put that in the playbook and had it ready.
That's crazy. Archaeology is the search for facts. Hey, Dwayne. We watched the film, not the it's not a 10 part limited series. The film, the game plan.
It's from Mayhem pictures as well as Buena Vista pictures and Disney. It's rated PG. It's an hour and 50, 5, 0 minutes. The budget on this film was 22,000,000 adjusted that's 33.4. Opening weekend was September 28, 2007.
It made $22,900,000. That adjusted is 34,500,000. Final gross in North America, 90,600,000. Adjusted, that's 137,800,000. Final worldwide, 147.8.
That's 224.8 adjusted. Baby. That's a juggernaut. Mhmm. That's not bad at all, especially, like, you bump in that international.
It was huge. The Rock Boulders. Power of the rock. There you go. Walking tall on that one.
Other releases this weekend, the kingdom, lust, caution, the feast of love. Weekend top 5. This film, the kingdom, resident evil extinction, good luck, Chuck, the 3:10 to Yuma remake. Chef's kiss on 3:10 to Yuma remake. Great western.
Love that movie. Charles, any thoughts? The Kingdom. That's the Jim that's the Jimmy Fox joint? Yeah.
That one. Sure. We could talk about that too. But what about 3 10 to Yuma with Christian Bale? I know.
So the the Good Luck Chuck was a great movie as well. There's some flowers. I believe in 3:10 to Yuma. And breathe. Wait.
Was good wait. Was Good Luck Chuck the, the the Dane Cook. Dane Cook. Dane Cook. Okay.
But the alien's like, shit. Who shit on the coats? Someone should Who shit on the coats? Same Other films from 2007, Fantastic 4, Rise of the Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, B Movie, Fred Claus, License to Wed. It's fucking here.
Fred Claus, Hannibal Rising, and you bet your ass, Wild Hogs. Wait. What was that Fred Claus the sequel? Nope. Okay.
Just making sure. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew. I it was so nice. I had to add it twice. I did see wild hogs in the theaters that year.
And you lived to tell the tale. That's incredible. No. No. No.
I think I probably saw it with my dad. I think I probably rode the motorcycle, like, from the back seat out the movie theaters. Oh, awesome. I I I saw a fantastic four rise of the Silver Surfer in the movie theater. I saw I did.
Ghost Rider in the movie theater. No. You did. I saw I saw Kingdom. I saw the Kingdom in the theater.
Not a strong year. I did not see this movie in the theater. Being honest here. I'm not not impressed with the movie. Maybe there was some cherry picking.
The letterboxed average on this film is 2.9. Follow us, won't you? Ben, what's your daily bobber? Oh, I'm a Atrun BMC. Charles, do you have a daily bobber?
I do not. Oh, my daily bobber is atpaulaxbadly. Richard Roper, he gave this the thumb down. I know. Yeah.
Rotten tomatoes, 29%. We added the popcorn meter this year y'all. 69% on the audience score. Metacritic 44. User score, 6 point o.
Major award wins and nominations. This was nominated for a kid's choice award. Okay? Favorite male. All the kids need to know me on the rest of me.
Before we move on to people, Charles, any comments on previous facts displayed by Paul? I've never been a Richard Roper guy. I've always been, on the popcorn scores, and The Rock loves the kids. That's all your fun luck. Yeah.
Understood. Yeah. Alright. The director of this picture is Andy Fickman. He directed She's the Man, You Again, Paul Bart 2, Blart Goo Doo, Blart You.
Blart, Blart, Blart, Blart, Blart. Paul Blart. Paul Blart. Blart. Blart.
Nicole Millard and Catherine Price, True Lies, the TV, show, Fallen 2016, and Audrey Wells, RIP, The Hate U Give, and George George George of the Jungle starring Cornish's favorite son. We've talked about it in 3 Cornish there you go. Director of photography is Greg Gardner. Girls trip, Elf, Big Trouble. Elf, good good looking movie.
Elf is a good movie. Damn good looking movie. Music was Nathan Wang. The final season, Love in Disguise, Inseparable. Producers, Mark Chiaardi, he did Chappaquiddick, Gordon Gray, The Secretariat, and others.
This movie Sorry. Just real quick. Oh. I just don't like the idea that we, gone through the director, and we did not mention that he directed the classic Who's Your Daddy movie I'm gonna listen to. My fault.
That's my fault. I'll own that. Dwayne Johnson plays Joe, Red 1, a movie I saw in the theater, Walking Tall, the remake, and Rampage. Keira Sedgwick plays Stella, the woodsman phenomenon, Something to Talk About. Madison Pettis plays Peyton, 7 pound freestyle, He's All That.
My fault. It's £7. My fault. £7. That's is that the Will Smith picture?
It is. Okay. Roselyn? Roselyn? Roselyn?
Oof. Roselyn Sanchez. That's the that's the reason why we picked the movie. Yeah. I mean Oh.
That deserves kinda deserves a star on her own. Plays Monique, act of valor, rush hour 2, and wall banger. Morris Chestnut plays Travis, Boyz n the Hood, GI Jane, Under Siege 2, Dark Territory. And check out Morris Chestnut this coming spring in Doctor Watson on Paramount Plus. I just feel like I've seen that commercial every fucking second.
Just on repeat. Yeah. Oh, about doing NFL games, I assume? Yep. Yeah.
No shit. Okay. Little, like, scrolling things at the bottom. Yep. It's like the actors, and they're just, like, outside of any they're like a PNG.
There's nothing behind them, and they're just, like, rotating. Yeah. Just Morris Chest not rotating in the body on the TV. It just I can't even know he's smart. Also, do people not realize that House, which was a show about medical mysteries, was a adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, and there was a Watson in that?
No. No. No. No. But that show was about Sherlock.
This show is about Watson. Oh, okay. Sorry. My bad. Also, when you were talking, you started getting the cadence of Christopher Walken, and I couldn't all I could Dad, don't.
Chip that note. Rundown. That's the rundown. We're watching the game You're right. Which that movie is pretty fucking good if I remember.
That's a lot of cows. Yeah. Dude, like, Schwarzenegger and him bump shoulders, and Schwarzenegger's like, they're your problem now or whatever. It's He's like, they're your torch. Yes, bitch.
Nice to see you. Yeah. Moving on. Hayes McArthur plays Kyle. She's out of my league.
Super Troopers 2, dear Santa. Brian White plays Jamal. Ambitions, Stomp the Yard, the family stone. Jamal Duff plays Clarence. Bright, the marine, dodgeball, a true underdog story.
And Paige Turco plays Karen, Invincible, Astoria, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, The Secret of the Ooze. Coming. 4 even though it's not a good movie. Charles. Okay.
I'll think about it. I'll think about it. To a decision. You got fun facts first. I was ready to drop some fun facts, including I love the fact that miss April O'Neil is in this movie.
But secret of the ooze is there's way more respect than you just got from the previous speaker. Moving on. I'm saying I love that movie. That movie has a giant big heart on it. Okay.
Alright. I feel like maybe it got dumped on a little bit right there, and I just wanna say, you know, I'm fighting words. It's just not I have to play back in time. I have to play in turtles in time. I would have been in that movie as well.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Absolutely. Coming. Yes. Okay.
Do what this area. Fun facts. Fun facts. Fun facts, everybody. It's fun fact time.
Tell me. You didn't pay money for this. This movie is jam packed with, cameos from sports figures and celebs, including 1 Marv Albert, the icon, Boomerizon, sports guy, RIP, Jim Gray, Steve Levy, Jay Glaser, Eddie George, Wally Cerviak, Sebastian Tafar, Gabby and Joe Malouf, the professor, John Clayton. RIP. By the way, when you said the professor, in my head, I was thinking And one.
And one player. I was like, I don't think I remember him in that movie. He must've been so young. No. But it's the professor John Clayton.
And and and plenty more, but RIP, CL legend. Hey, mom. I've done my statement. Yes. Dwayne The Rock Johnson came up with the idea of his character to be such a huge Elvis fan because Johnson himself is a serious Elvis fan and much of the Elvis memorabilia and the like, the character owns actually belongs to Johnson.
And real ones know who watched SmackDown back in the day. Since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell. The bottom of your bony drive the SmackDown hotel. Was this, like, was this Rocky Maivia days or whatever? No.
No. This is the rock this is the piece rock. Okay. Got it. Got it.
That monologue and him singing that song is the reason why SmackDown is called WWE SmackDown right now. His name got know that. And that catchphrase and him randomly turn a paper beat match, grabbing the microphone in the middle of a match full sweat and breaking them to a Elvis sing along. Wow. Perfect.
And it's all good. That's awesome. There were negotiations between Disney and the NFL to use official teams and logos in this movie, but negotiations went on too long and were too difficult to come to fruition. And the producers opted for a fictional franchise in the end. So question I have a question about that.
My question is, I'm curious when this happened and if they had already locked down Boston as a location. Because if they had already locked down Boston as location, you're gonna tell me you're gonna make up a fictional quarterback in 2007 to be the New England Patriots quarterback? I'm confirming that that was the literal plan. That it is. That was the plan.
Yes. That is wild. Or maybe they were making a statement on what they thought that the current quarterback of that team was in o seven. Any way to get as much Under Armour exposure as possible. I watch men in the arena, and I don't like Tom Brady, but I respect the hell.
But goddamn it. I respect him. Yeah. I respect you. I wanna shake his hand.
I wanna shake his hand. He should never commentate, though. Yeah. 69. Okay.
That's a different subject. This is the last film released by Disney under the Buena Vista pictures banner. And, this is also the last film. And this one actually hits really hard, really, really hard for me. But this is the last film that Dwayne Johnson would be credited as and use the moniker, The Rock.
And, yeah, that's a long story behind that, and I think it is, it's a detriment to his career. And it's the reason why we're underwater until he's able to resurrect it with Vin Diesel Hey, Dwayne. And Channing Tatum in both the Fast and Furious franchise and the GI Joe franchise, and he became the franchise saver. That's not the topic. So it's lame.
Hey. Oh, so weird. Well Well, I think you should've kept the rock. Just wanna throw that out there. The no.
Wait. Before we do the the bad thing Yeah. What? So he still wrestles and and shows up into special appearances. Right?
And he does that as The Rock. But these are 2 totally separate entities now. Yes? Or Well, no. So what had happened was in 0 7, when this movie was going on, his agents at the time told me he should start distancing himself from The Rock Monitors, but more importantly, from wrestling in general.
So he famously, from 06 to 0 12, refused to do anything wrestling related outside of maybe for a hall of fame ceremony to induct his father or whatnot. But he refused to do anything wrestling wise until he came back o 12, and that has a lot to do with his ex wife becoming his manager and taking over his career and him firing all his agents, including the ones who told him he should distance himself from his big fan base, which are his original fan base, the rest of the 3 fans. Yeah. So he was like a wrestler slash actor, and the actor part is the most important part. The other part, we're not talking about that for a long time.
For about the 7, 8 years. Wow. He said no. Wow. Okay.
Ben, you were gonna say something. Oh, Charles, can you tell us the log line for this movie? Log line. An NFL quarterback living the bachelor lifestyle discovers that he has an 8 year old daughter from a previous relationship. That is a different idea.
Right? I think that his game plan to do what he just did, no one's done it before. I fucking I award you all the points. I give you all the awards, the MVP, the ever I I fucking support the shit out of this. Hey.
Hey. Hey, Paul. That man had a game plan. Yeah. And he followed the playbook.
Yeah. He got a game winning movie. Run those numbers again. Ben, how do you feel about this? If this was Tom Brady, he'd say, I just think that what we saw here was someone succeeding at such a high level.
It was so good. You can see here that he throws the ball that way, and it's a touchdown. He hit the tight end hard from behind. This episode is brought to you by our days and our nights, our wrongs and our rights. Our tight ends and our tight tights?
Tights. Tight tights. I was gonna say bright lights, but okay. Oh, man. There are so many things that could be wrapped into this.
Wrapped into this? I saw what you did there. I mean I mean, it flashing lights. I mean, I it was a reach on my part a little, but Well, we're gonna take a look. I tried.
When we come back, we'll play a quick round of Cinephile, and then we'll talk about the game plan. Wow. I hope you enjoyed that very professional ad for 1448. Holy shit. That sounds great.
Charles, what are you gonna be doing on January 31st February I'll be at the Broadwater, and before and after that, I'll be at the Flunch. But mostly I'll be at the Broadwater enjoying 1448, and yourself. I'll be there too. Maybe people should come by and give us a little squeeze and see some cool theater. Also, I will say just because we're in this time and we've communicated with all our artists, there is something that is really bonding and healing around 1448 and in this community that we're trying to grow.
I think this is, like, a really ripe time to have this experience. So, if you're in LA and you're listening to this and, you wanna come by, just come by. Just pay what you can, and you can, meet me finally. Spoiler alert. You're not trying to grow it.
You're doing it. Thank you. Ours. Yeah. Okay.
Ben, where do we go from here? Chinephile. Chinephile. What I have in my hand is a deck of cards. It has Classic on the program.
Movie star or actor, whatever you wanna call it, on it, and a movie. I'm gonna pull one at random, Charles. It's your, you get to tell me when when to stop. Charles, you get to name the actor. And warning, the text of the movie, the freebie movie you get is in yellow, so it's really hard to read.
But that's your freebie. So you get the you say the actor first, say the movie, and then we'll do a round robin. I'll go, Paul will go, come back to you. And the 1st person who can't name a movie this actor was in will name the first time they saw the movie the game plan. Does that make sense?
Okay. Alright. Tell me when to stop. I'm not stressed. You're stressed.
Very thorough. Tell me when to stop. Let's stop. Thorough. He's a good man, Jeffrey.
And thorough. Alright. I'm not gonna look. Paul's not gonna look. Here we go.
Okay. Jeff Goldblum, The Adventures at Buckaroo. I will go with Jurassic Park, The Fly. Go Ragnarok. Jurassic Park, The Lost World.
Igby Goes Down. Independence Day. Earth Girls are Easy. Listen to our Earth Girls are Easy episode, please. Love it.
Wicked. That was wicked, bro. Wicked. Thor love and hammer. I think does he show up in that?
I think there is a Charles. I think there is a deleted scene. I don't know. I don't think there is. No.
There is a deleted scene that he's in, but that doesn't, hold on. Nope. That doesn't count. I mean, Charles immediately shook his head like, The ref the ref threw a flag and said but it's appropriate. You brought us a game plan.
So, Charles, please tell us about your first experience with the game plan, what you would have given it out of 5, and your new experience as well. Well, okay. Well, the first time I watched the game plan was probably back in 08, 09, and I think it was one of those movies that we had laying around the house on DVD. So I definitely did not see this in the theaters. Here's the thing.
I remember having a soft spot in the heart board being like, well, that was surprisingly better than I thought it was gonna be with very low expectations. I'm not gonna lie to you. I watched it, and I think it is way better than it has any right to be still with lower expectations. Okay. What was your first ranking, and what is your new ranking?
My first ranking was probably a 3. I'm the same as ranking as the 3.2. Oh, he did the, okay, the guess rule, the 3.25, the quarter rule. Okay. The gray it's grace.
We allow grace. You got, like, 3 yards up on on Yeah. We spotted this really yeah. You get the fucking spot. First down.
Okay. Okay. 1st, I wanna say, Charles, we've been friends for a long time. Oh, fuck. And at this point, I don't think there's anything that that would change.
I think that we're we're pretty locked in for a while. We've been on stage together. Same walks. We shared laughs together. We've cried together.
We've been doing those choices. Okay. You know what I mean? So what I'm gonna say now They've killed together. Look.
One single plot. My first experience watching this movie was, a couple nights ago on Disney plus. This was past my time at Hollywood Video, so I would did not remember the cover. I honestly forgot this movie really existed. I will say watching on Disney Plus, there is the the, unfortunate I don't pay for, like, Primo because I'm I'm a I'm a blower, so I have to watch it with the commercials.
And they're not the Morris Chestnut commercials. Let me tell you. He crossed his arms like he's Watson. Yeah. They're rotating at you.
Stop fucking rotating. Watch it. So about halfway through this movie, my thought was surely this is almost over. And I was I was very wrong. I then wrote down, was this a made for TV Disney Channel movie?
Because I didn't know. It wasn't, but could have been. Yeah. These are wrongs, our rights. Here we are.
And so I I struggle because the the the what it says is it says, comment like, it puts in categories, comedy, sports. Those are the categories that this movie puts it into. And I struggle because the movie is not very funny, and there's not a lot of sports in it. Like, we don't watch a lot of football. So, anyway I see.
My my ranking currently and I'm happy to move. And I have 2 I have 2 ratings rating systems because I couldn't decide on them. So I'm sitting at I love you, Charles. I'm sitting at 1 and a half bedazzled balls Yeah. Or 1 and a half burger farts.
Those are my 2. That's good. I think burger fart is pretty good. I forgot my star. It wasn't a star.
It was a, a football biscuit. Just wanted to go out there. I I Oh, yeah. Football biscuits. I was gonna go with with bedazzlers.
So I and, I mean, burger farts has to be the winner. I like Really good. Really good. Cake fart. My first experience with this movie was too recent.
So recent. And it's one of those things where there was, like, a turning point for the PG rating. I think it happened with PG 13 with Batman and, like, especially Jurassic Park because that's Spielberg and pretty violent. PG, I feel like, has been diluted, especially, like, the late nineties into the 2000 because I think about PG movies, and I think about Little Giants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Home Alone and Raiders of the Last Ark and Gremlins and Beetlejuice and Twins and the Sandlot, which now most of these, who knows where they exist, I guess, in PG 13, maybe. But then we get like, PG becomes blank check-in Jingle All the Way and the Tooth Fairy and the Pacifier Hey, Dwayne.
In this movie. It was just different. It had a different kind of approach. I I feel like I just mentioned some of the truly indisputably great movies. And part of that is PG works as a way to challenge a filmmaker and an audience and etcetera at this time, where there's, like, this really insane balance of tones that I think is happening, and this movie isn't super interested in that.
It's a it's a bummer because, like, I don't know. This is this is one of those movies that I feel that trend of PG not really having teeth anymore, and that's fine. It's not bad to be palatable. The thing that's tough for me, as Ben mentioned, sometimes when it went to commercial on Disney plus, because I'm I'm poor. I'm very poor.
When it went to commercial, I didn't either feel that the cut was that abrupt or upsetting or it was massively abrupt or upsetting where I had to run it back where I was like is something missing a couple times? And it's like oh, no. It's not that. It's because almost everything feels unfinished. Like, you're left with the high hard one on everything.
You don't see much football. The Rock dances for 5 seconds, and people are going nuts. Like, everything is just I don't know. It feels un everything feels unrealized. I think there was a level of despite my agreeance that it feels quite long and is considering what the premise is and all and that you see all these things coming.
My decision, I'm at 2 bedazzlers. The editing is so hard for me, But and I mean by that, like, the decision is not hard to be that the 2 I we're gonna go with 2. I'm gonna go with 2 bedazzlers. I do wanna mention that we we don't wanna just shit on your choices, child. No.
He's been your friend for a long time. He's been your friend for a long time. Dude, the beginning and ends and deaths and and and and lights and here's the thing. I'm going to go to war for this, I think. I feel like you know?
I feel like, I've heard nothing wrong so far. Outside of my biggest criticism in the movie, I did not have to worry about commercial breaks, was pacing. And I I wanna say I agree a 100% where things felt rushed where they didn't have to, which probably makes the movie longer than it needs to be if that's the case because you probably took it away. It's about a hour 30. The girl is so adorable.
The the little girl is just staring. She every time they're like, I hate this movie, the little girl is just so adorable. She killed my heart. I think and I think we should start the movie God. But I think one of the things that I kept thinking while watching this movie is I would rather watch big daddy.
Big daddy, little giants over the top were the 3 movies that I thought of recently. I should say I'm not a big fan of big daddy, though. That's why. It it's a little bit of a mean spirited movie at times. I But I feel you.
Which is part of why I love it. But It's a filthy comparison, though. I understand the comparison. Okay. We get Blazers down 5 at the half.
Let's talk about the Shut the movie. Shut the movie. Shut the movie. Sack the Ruby. And now, our feature presentation.
It's time to take out the trash. We didn't we don't do a lot of Disney pictures on this program. No. We haven't. We really haven't.
Atlantis, The Lost Empire. Yeah. I mean, if we're not talking to, like, the the studios that are technically Disney Yeah. Sure. Like or now or how so started with the Disney castle logo.
I think the piece of the movie that feels the most cinematic is the opening where the credits are, where it's sweeping around Boston from aerial shots and stuff. Because from there, Ben, I agree. Like, it feels very kind of made for TV. And I guess, you know, there's part of me, like, going into the beginning. Like, it's tough because, like, again, we don't do a lot of we don't do a lot of Disney movies.
We also don't do a lot of family movies. Gremlins, Monster Squad. Sure. But I think we we do family movie we do family movies that have teeth. Atlantis was a was a one off.
And I think that, like, there is a there is a place for movies that are like this uplifting family sort of something you can watch with your grandma and your and your niece at the same time? It's inoffensive. Yeah. Yeah. I really enjoy the the usage of has no teeth.
Because starting with the very beginning of the movie, I think it's interesting that it wants to have heart. And every time it has opportunity to showcase something heartfelt, it always pulls the chair out underneath itself. And you're right about the I mean, I think, you know, there's, Does it pull the chair out, or is it stuck to your ass still? Well, let me tell you. That that arise out of me.
That's what I'm saying. That happened in the movie? It's not a bad moment. But I think the opening movie starts you start by seeing The Rock and you know? I'm sorry.
Dwayne. So forget about it, because And and he is surrounded by his teammates, and he's obviously showcased to be a loner. Showcased to be sort of an asshole, but people are there. People are are he's a superstar, so people support him. And then he has his first heartfelt sort of moment with Morris Chestnut where he seems like, okay.
I really like this guy. And then right away, he turns right into a dick, and it and it shows cases right away straight to him being a loner. Everyone leaves. The party's over. He's by himself.
And you're like, oh, that's that's the heart of it. Fight gag. And they do a fight gag in there. They they always like I yeah. I think also it to me, it's like the the writing of the character, like, the the the writing for me of, like, this is the quarterback, and and he sees an open receiver, and he's just gonna run it because it is because he's a selfish prick.
It's just not, like it didn't I didn't believe it. As as a football fan and as a as a human, it it Yeah. Thanks. No. But, like, it felt it just it felt it it felt like a like a kid's movie choice, which I guess if that's it is a kid's movie.
And I guess like that, I don't know. It it it just didn't feel It's crazy that you just saw Josh Allen do a whole season of this, and it's still show fans. Yeah. But Josh Allen has no receivers. I mean, he's got And neither does Dwayne.
Sorry. Joe Well, he had Sanders. He had Cooper. Like, Jamal could catch kinda the thing that I've that tears me at the beginning of this movie is, like, he's surrounded by people. People like him.
Morris Chestnut's like you don't understand this like people liking you and sleeping with models and having a closet full of Chanel bags. This is hollow. Having a family is what matters. And how that kind of progresses, but also this weird thing they posited in aliens, a movie that I love that's not for families, but a movie that is for families where it's like, hey. If you wanna be happy, you can't be single and, like, pursue your whatever it is in your career or your obsession or your passion.
Like, you gotta have a fucking family. And that's, like, kinda what this movie pushes throughout. And it's not that it's wrong. I I I I think the character arc that happens as a result of that is is good, but I I I'm kinda like for most of the movie, I'm like and then when when there are opportunities that can be that are earned and can be taken are not. I get like, it's like I'm left with the with the old high hard one, difficult days, difficult nights, all the all the way around.
And Joe Joe Joe starts off with this party. He gives a model a channel bag that has a gift in it or whatnot, and we we see that he's he's lonely. They they lead into this pretty early, and he's obsessed with himself. Like, he's watching this ESPN piece on himself and can't even watch the parts that make him look humanistic. No way.
Yeah. RIP Stewart Scott, by the way. Yeah. Do you think The Rock himself has this wall that's just his face? Like Almost There is no no.
Every time he walks in, he looks at it and goes, what's up, Dwayne? Hey, Dwayne. I Never say no. I also forgot The Rock looked like this. Yes.
He's just become, like, Bane at this point. He's so much smaller in this movie. Yeah. But still also call him they still call him, like, a massive human. I'm like, yeah.
You are. But do you realize you're about to eat, like, another human? He looks like a University of Miami linebacker playing quarterback because he fucking is. I I didn't know you mentioned that. Also too.
I was waiting for someone to mention, like, he look he looks less like a quarterback than anyone else on their field. Yeah. Fucking armchair here. It's not like the motion's bad or, like, the football. That's a part of the thing that bugs me.
Movie kinda opens with a football moment. There's a a very short football moment in the middle, another kinda short football moment in the end. And the football moments are not bad, but there's so few. I agree with that. I thought there would be more.
I thought there was more, honestly. And it really is just the opening and closing. And there's a lot of football that happens. I just they choose to have to screen. Yeah.
There's also Don't leave me with the high, hard one. There's also one of our, like, football puns where I started to my the question I wrote down was, is he a football player or a football themed Batman villain? Because the themes the, like, football players don't just walk around and go, okay. We're gonna call an audible. Here's a playbook.
Here's the play this is off limits. This is on limits. I think you do when you're still only guy with no friends and who just that's socially inept. Ben, your your comments are leaving Charles cold to your please of mercy to still be his friend. Nice to meet you.
I will say, in my, research, I did a deep dive on this movie. I did not. They but one of the things I did read that was they had to stop filming for a few months because he legitimately did hurt himself, one of the action plays on one of the Oh, shit. Football plays. So he really did, like, break a leg or something.
He did something. So I kinda wondered if that has to do with maybe them not doing as many football scenes in the movie as maybe they had planned or wanted to. So they did ballet instead. Instead, they just did ballet. What's the ballet?
If you think about it, it's just all him looking very stiff and doing a lot of random lifts. A lot of it is. And so when the kid shows up, the daughter shows up, Peyton, that whole exchange is weird to me. Not only that it's like, I'm sorry. We're supposed to believe that he's so tall that this person is not in his field of vision.
What's it's one of those things where it's like, don't do these jokes to me. Like, this is a g rated movie joke. Don't do that. Sure. Sure.
Sure. I mean, yeah, I I guess, like, this is where I keep coming back to. Like, if you told me if you legitimately told me this is a made for TV Disney movie, I would have a higher rating because I could see it Sure. In that lens. We grew up in different, like, time, but is it true?
Young. Not as young as me, but he's very young. I mean, like, us together as a trio have grown up in a different time than kids nowadays, obviously. And what we grew up on, we've been there so much different. Yeah.
Right. And you're not allowed to watch a lot of the movies you've linked. On a skippity toilet. Fire. La flame.
He mentioned that why they hired you I I have to think to myself, would do would this be something that, would appeal to me, I guess, as a 8 or 9 year old? These these side gags and these tech tech things. I think that's a valid point. And I think that if this movie were made today, it would be on Disney plus. And I think when you when you see it through that lens, it it lowers this bar to a point where you're like, oh, I enjoyed that, and it was like something I watched on TV.
I was allowed to watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit 5 years ago on Disney plus when I was 7. So but I was also, like, that's a movie now that most parents would be like, my stars. Like, that or gremlins or a lot of Ghostbusters. Like, a lot of these movies that we mentioned, a lot of parents now would not let their, like, 7, 8, 9, 10 year old kid watch that. Oh, I think I hate the game, and and it's rated the same.
Yeah. But I think, like, the it's tough because ratings, like, just they're not great. It's all about violence. But I also think that there is a degree of An innuendo. Playing down to the kid joke in this.
Yes. That that some movies the the my favorite of, like, kids' movies, they don't they don't do that as much. For me, at least, Space Jam, the original, is one of my favorites. And Space Jam, the One of the great bad movies. Really bad.
And I think what Space Jam, the bad the new one does really badly is it plays down Everything? Yeah. Plays down to the lowest common denominator joke. It's the minion effect. You know what I mean?
It doesn't go out of this way. I think we've gotten really spoiled as well. I think there's 2 things I'd say to that. I think there is a if you talk to our parents, I don't know if they necessarily continue to watch kids' movies as adults. Something that I think Sure.
I'm down to still do. I think our generation is still able to do. But the reason why we're we do that is because some somewhere along the Pixar lines, we started getting movies that were 2 first. Kids and movies could or and adults composed to get Challenging movies. Yeah.
And so the result, I think that's why I say time maybe the spoil of it is that we are not used to seeing movies that are dictated purely to kids because everything nowadays has to be written to the idea of I want a parent to want to see this movie with their kid and not feel like it's like a homework assignment, but enjoyable. Oh, well I will say please. Then now I'm going to film it. I think now I think you're I think that's a really apt, comparison. But I think this movie had potential to do both and chose to only do one even though I will say they did give us Rafa Sanchez in as a marina.
And that was purely for the adults in the room. I'm gonna comment on this really quickly as well where it's like, you know, became something of the eighties nineties, I guess, where live action was still asking the serious questions in the PG rating, and then it became a thing. Jessica mentioned this in our gremlins episode where it's like, this is a thing that's, like, maybe not really consumable for children, and a lot of those things that became consumable for both kids and adults move to animation because it's like, is it safer to deliver some of these hard messages that way, like gremlins tries to do? Like, I don't fucking know. I do know this.
There's a joke that works here where they're getting into Joe's car, and via kid logic, when Joe slaps the helmet on her, like, a kid would go, okay. Ready. Let's get in the car. I know, like and I know there's an airbag filled with poop and I'm glad the the kid in The Rock didn't get it in the car there. But this is the movie that has the airbag filled with poop.
Right? Nope. That was a different movie. Yes, it is. What movie was I watching?
Oh, man at work. She mentioned an airbag. Well, I am cross made. That was a legit choice. Yeah.
We'll leave that. That's good stuff. Like, they I mean, also, on this car ride, are they listening to Tough Enough on a loop? It feels like that song's on for several minutes of the movie and doesn't wanna stop. And then you get the cinnamon cookie thing where she the daughter has baked cookies.
So Yes. My I have a lot of issues. And she can just show up at practice apparently and do whatever she wants. I just What's she policy? Mostly.
I have a lot of issues with if you're allergic to cinnamon, you should be very alert when someone hands you. Yeah. He's allergic to cinnamon. And, like, he seems to be unsure what's happening. Thank you.
And, like, he's looking in the mirror. I'm like, what the fuck do you think is happening? You're you're They think they see it. They think they see it. It's funnier than it fucking is.
It's a very strong flavor. Yeah. I will say that. Yeah. Smell it.
Yeah. And the second part of this, as someone who's part of their job is doing this, if a child has a nut allergy, that's not just something that's, like, that, like, is mentioned. I'm 7. This is when the kids might be a little tougher about the nut allergies. Alright?
They try to mention it so coyly in the exposition where you're like, well, that's coming back. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They try to be too fucking sly about it.
Of course. They the this is but it does kinda make sense that he neglects the kid with his nut allergy. Yeah. Of course. He's the one that I do say doesn't matter.
You're right. It's gonna be one that's kind of egregious. I will give you that. So, like, the movie's gotten, like, a couple I've kind of ebbed and flowed a little in this first act a tiny bit because I'm like, oh, dope. This guy has an SLR.
This guy, like, is gonna try to be a dad in this moment or whatever. And, like, there's the helmet moment and the I like the glove slap moment, but it it leans really hard into the the cinnamon lisp thing. And when Peyton calls her mom, this is the thing about it that is very Disney to me is it's like outside of some of a lot of the edits and stuff and some of the acting is it's like the writing is so leading. Like you can kind of it's like and that's fine if you're enjoying just, like, fucking turning something on, and you can maybe tune into a moment that you're like, oh, great. But for me, like, watching it, it starts to fall apart quick.
That's yeah. Okay. That's fair. I I I was, I watched this movie 16 years ago, and I watched it today. I did not see this twist.
I did not see this twist coming. I would I would I did not see it coming either. I wanna do that out there. I didn't see the second twist. That she's not as her mom?
Right. Yeah. I did not see that. That's that's the twist. That's what that's what I mean.
That's the first yeah. That's the first twist. Exactly. So it's like you almost don't see the, like, that the mom's dead or whatever as a or or that she cooked this up herself. Peyton did this all herself.
I mean, that I I saw that coming a mile away. Yeah. No. I yeah. I think that's Yeah.
That's supposed to I think it's supposed to be the first okay. I felt like it was supposed to be the first twist a little, and I could be wrong there. She's getting on a plane. So she Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. So, okay. Yeah. But, like Yeah.
They're like, well, yeah. My aunt Karen's dead. My mom's alive, and then it shows up and it's actually aunt Karen. And I was like, oh, okay. The second twist kinda I don't know.
The second I mean, I have to say that the only twist, but for me Right. Exactly. I feel like it attempts to We are jumping around. We are jumping. Which is fine.
We've done that before. We jump around sometimes. But Jump jump jump around. I did write down that that I did not actually see that surprise coming that that that it did. That Karen was the alive aunt and not the dead mom.
Because the daughter does lie about it. She says, like, my aunt Karen's dead. My mom's in Africa, and she review I feel like you tried to send us something to We we see the movie, the mom or the the quote on mom. The movie the aunt. In Africa.
We see her doing the things that make it seem like Peyton is telling the truth. I think it's very obvious. I I think no kid nor adult would think that any parental would just drop her off and be like, alright. Go meet your father and walk away. So that part, I think, is is supposed to be obvious that Yeah.
Obviously, she's she's quick to open her own. She's she's, you know, she's there on her own Okay. Volition that, like, she didn't I will relent. The twist that the mom was the aunt and the mom was dead or, yeah, whatever got me. The the I feel like Yeah.
Also by saying this in the first act while we're still talking about the first act, anyone who has not seen this movie but listened to the podcast now think this movie is as deep as the 6th stiffs. Like, that's right. That's how good the movie was. That's how good the choice out of this movie. The mom was dead the whole time.
Dead for 6 months. Look. I'm not gonna say this movie is stupid because stupid is a mean word. It is. But stupid est.
You said it with the stupid est. Oh. Look it up. Look it up. There is a level of and, like, I I'm starting to, like, try to see this through the lens of a made for TV Disney movie.
And in that lens, I'm like, maybe there is a place where, like, not in the year it came out, but, like, 13 or 12 year old Ben might have just, like, thrown on this movie and enjoyed it. Just just as, like, some like a background fun football movie. And his friends his friends, his teammates have a fun dynamic. Now, again That I agree with. It's a kid's movie dynamic, but it's a fun dynamic.
It's little things, like, where it's, like, the dynamics of, like, football v ballet and how these things actually work together and crossover. And it's weird I get thrown where it's like there's there's this ballet thing that's happening and The Rock wakes up on the couch and is popping his entire body, which I believe actually helps prevent arthritis by popping those nitrogen bubbles. But somebody tell me if I'm wrong. But, like, there's a random cut to, like, some rowers outside for, like, no reason, and it feels like the setup Boston. But it feels like the setup for a scene of a sitcom or, like, Gilmore Girls or, like, it's something for television.
Yeah. And there's a lot of those. You didn't think it was just because it was in Wicked Boston and beat They were in Wicked City. Hey, sugar. They wanna showcase how big he is in the city, how how famous he is in the city.
Joe Kingsman, dude. Joe Kingsman is walking The fucking king. Oh. Rebels are wicked this year, No doubt, dude. So, like, the nanny show up at practice, the potential nannies, and Joe picks 1 because, again, like, anybody can show up to close team practices to do whatever they want anytime in this very grounded adult film.
Well, when an agent brought in the nannies, I wanna say. And They do whatever they want. Because he's he's Tom Brady could bring nannies to his practice. That's fucking Kingsman. Wow.
I just got fucking put in my place. And I'll He's right. Paul, you called this a a an adult movie, and that's a different Isn't this a movie for adults? That adults enjoy, adults only? What where did you did you watch this on Pornhub?
Did you watch the right movie? I'm not saying You also watch the Black Knight? Not gonna say it's not available on Youporn. Okay. Question.
Is there a blind side porn version? Like The blind side. Yes. No. I think it's really still called the blind side.
The backside. Let's pause let's pause the part. The butt stuff. We have to watch something. So we've had Joe has all these business interests, and one is opening a restaurant, and he leaves his daughter there Yeah.
And has to tear ass back to go pick her up. And this is his first big, like, press fallout of this movie about having the kid and being a shitty dad. And the somehow the daughter still wins an argument to get rid of the nanny. What was it again? Like, there will be no nanny.
Well, he first and foremost, I wanna go back to that press conference because Oh, yeah. That's where we're at. Absolutely. The opening the opening question to that press conference was, hey, Joe. How are you gonna remember the playbook if you can't remember your 8 year old daughter at the club?
And I'm like Yeah. Yep. That's it. Reporting right there. That's even journalism right there.
I wanna go down there. That's a good that's a good that's a good that's a turn of me. I think she threatened to tell the press that she had a margarita. She does. You're right.
That's how she gets rid of the nanny. She she that was that's the compromise that he is. She goes to ballet class, and we meet, Rosalind Sanchez and all the again, and talk about and the ballet moms that were obsessed with him and all this other shit, which feels like a rock note. Like, he was like, we should have more and more moms that wanna fuck me. Let's have more moms come in that that would really like to fuck The Rock.
Dwayne. So do you know, like up, Dwayne. If we if we talk about what's up, Dwayne? We talk about, like, the biggest, like, misses in, like, film history. You know, they talk about, like, Will Smith missing out on the matrix and whatnot.
Yeah. Robin Sanchez chose not to appear in rush hour 3 to do this movie. Yeah. I'm happy about it. But this movie made fucking money, man.
This movie made fucking money. About it. You know? I I forgot because I owned Rush Hour 2 on the Dividend and digital video disc. That's correct, Paul.
There's a lot of adults only franchise movies, that I like that were on digital video disc. Did any of them star Rosalind Sanchez? Just No. No. None at all.
So I I gotta say Rosalind Sanchez. There is there is an appearance by my beloved Portland Trail Blazers basketball franchise in this film from footage that was used from a year or 2 prior to the movie's release because I noticed I was like, fucking Ruben Patterson? The Rock's hosting this party and he's very concerned about, don't fuck up my apartment. You that's alpaca. You dab it.
Like He's changed. Yeah. Exactly. And and now things are bedazzled. Like, we're getting the child has, like, integrated into the into the house.
Yeah. When the when the rush looks over offensive lineman's, like, his offensive lineman's, you know, face and sees the nacho dip. Michelle from Dodgeball. You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
Yeah. And he he licks the little napkin, and he wipes it off like a caring parent, and he recognized he's been around this kid for too long. Come on. That's a good laugh. Sure.
Yeah. I Good laugh. I don't know if I laughed that much. I don't know. I don't know.
I don't know. I and the the bubble thing when he dives right into the bubbles, though, right after that where he's like, get the fuck out of here, guys. No more nachos. And the daughter overflows the apartment and he Has ruined Paul's mom. To get her, like okay.
It's just like he has a character growth arc where it's like all this shit happened to his apartment and then she overflows the bath and he can't see her and he panics because he's worried about her. Like, it's it's cute. It does take character moments for him. He he has growth. Wow.
Paul Paul said that with through gritted teeth. I did a little bit. Well, it's like gritted teeth. Like, we get it's like 2 plays of a playoff game, And, like, so much of this movie, they're like, hey. This happened.
Cut. Hey. This is happening. Cut. Yeah.
I mean, they're a fucking There there's, like, there's the the opening a restaurant storyline. There's the, needing sponsorship of this random burger place storyline. 25,000,000 burger farts. Burger spot. That's crazy.
The one that gives you the burger farts. Get kids gain weight, and it gives them gas. Mhmm. There's a daughter who's, like, in your locker room with a bandana over her eyes, and you're like, you're gonna see some giant dongs. That's that's up there.
Yeah. I mean, yeah. That's a good parenting. He faced her away. She lifts it up easily.
It could, but she disciplined. That may be accurate. I mean, I mean, we see him in that fucking leotard anyway. So who like, what's the difference? When The Rock does the ballet and the whole team shows up ballet story line?
So hold on. And they're the yeah. He gets roped into this because he's interested in So so the ballet teacher, miss Sanchez. So so are you to tell me that this whole ballet school, their preparation for a show, the show was actually gonna be about the teacher and some random dad in the ballet? Not not only would the kid crazy, but the fact that, yeah, they they just they they chose to really spot, like, the adults and said the kids are in the background.
Fuck them. I also got a cute cat. I wrote that note. I thought it was really funny. That's Jamie.
Funny singer. It gets the big gal at the very end. It's that's the Jamie, it's me, your dad, turbo man. I pick you. Like, the hand the rock dances for fucking 3 seconds, and everybody's like, oh my god.
Oh my god. Sub, Dwayne. This was The best. Like, if if I was teaching a theater class and I invited you to it, and it was like it came, and it was Hamlet, and I was Hamlet. And I just had all the kids, and you'd be like, what the hell do you what I like to do from that.
I think it's kinda worse than that. Is is that is that, you did Hamlet and decided that you were gonna play the ghost, and then decided the ghost is the main character, not Hamlet. So they can see that someone at at a professional industry level handles Because he's killed by the Superman doll. Yeah. He'll be the tree.
But if you'll be the tree, and somehow the tree becomes the main character by the end of that ballet, I'm really confused. Lot of people died for that. I legitimately had the thought while I was watching it if if this was based on a real ballet. Like, I was like, oh, is this the ballet of bits of her day street? The wind and all those.
I, like, was like, wait. That's enough. Is this the Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein? This is the the stage ballet. It's not.
It's not. Peyton is sending pics to her aunt mom. Peyton Manning is throwing pics? Peyton Manning is is sending pics to the other team that's across the field, across the pond. Suddenly, The Rock's being kind of a dad where he's, like, cuddled up with her on the couch, and he's gonna share stuff with her.
And, of course, like, this model interjects. And Tatiana. Yeah. And and the daughter, I do think, like, looks like in terms of look, like, casting, great job in my in my opinion. But she looks most like his daughter when the model was pinching her cheeks.
I'm like, oh, yeah. That's yes. I don't know what it is about like, I don't know what it is. Oh, yeah. And what is the the model she has, like, the same, like, blonde bob haircut as a stepmom in, what's the Lindsay Lohan?
Yeah. I was just like Parent Trap? No. No. Parent Trap.
Yeah. She does. She looks like yeah. A 100%. And I was like, there there was a lot of, like, anti stepmom, anti dad's girlfriend stuff in Energy.
Yeah. Thousands. You know? Just get with my dead mom's sister. Just be with my dead mom's sister.
It's fine. It's not weird. White woman named Karen. She'll complain about any You ask her to. You threw an interception from the 5 yard line, Joe.
Maybe you should've tucked an asshole. No. No. Karen would go up and go, that is not an interception. He did not catch that.
And, like, she would convince the ref. Like, okay. The tape. No. Look at the tape.
Look at the tape. Yep. Karen called the manager. Oh, for it. Karen called the kids again.
Deal with it. Took the kids. But the fight of finally The Rock and and the daughter get into, like, a fight, I and I I hate to say this because it's one of those things where it's like this is the falling backward for me in terms of like I feel no actual sparks or energy or met like angry feelings in that fight, and before the fight gets to that point, The Rock breaks it up with the like, and your big brown eyes, and I love you. And I know it tries to bring that back and be cute about it, but it's like, no. Let the like, let these 2 characters, like, be mad at each other and sit in it a little bit.
Like, that's okay. Like, don't be afraid. I agree and disagree at the same time on that one. Okay. I mean, he's an enormous human being.
Yes. And here's the thing is, I think that was one of those moments where I was not a fan of, The Rock, the actor Yep. Where I thought the writing I thought the writing was actually pretty nice there. I really enjoyed the young girl's performance there, and she just kept like, yeah. No.
And what else? And what else? And what else? Because it's it's what hit hard and it's what made the twist hit harder for me later on. We recognize that the mother is is passed, and she wants to hear about his opinions of her her mother who's on this fresh thing.
And, you know, I didn't in the moment, I'm just like, wow. This is I'm interested in writing. And then later on, I think that scene really start to mean more to me. When I start thinking about the idea, she's like, what else? What else is she how do I remind you of my mother?
Makes way more sense when you recognize that she's grieving her mother's passing. Sure. And I I maybe misspoke there. Like, she's not bad in it. It's almost like written in a way or noted in a way by someone where he starts making little jokes or sweet comments that, like, make it not land as well as I feel like it could where he feels genuinely mad at her.
But also, he's an enormous human and you don't want him necessarily yelling at, like, a 7 or 8 year old girl. Yeah. I'm, like, terrifying her. I don't know. And you think they should've committed.
Commit to it. Commit to it. Use your one f bomb. Use your one f bomb. That's the moment.
Hey. That's PG 13, and it can't it has to be used specifically. But the unless you're unless you're Beetlejuice. Nice fucking model. So she she eats something with nuts in it.
Right? Yeah. And he runs her to which I thought was a nice moment. Like, I was like, oh, yeah. He's a football player.
He can just Yeah. Pick her up and, like, run full speed. Made me remember how much I really loved the moment in True Grit where the remake, the Cohens Brothers, where Rooster Cogburn has to ride with the girl. That there's another one. Like, there are so many instances of, like, this kind of movie.
It's sort of like a a lone wolf and cub story Yeah. But not as, like, it's not the, like, heroine, you know, Last of Us or Mandalorian, but it is this, like, the similar esque storyline. And there are so many that I can think of, and I and I guess, like, I I don't as much as I do like this moment that he runs her to the hospital, I never really feel a lot of emotional grounding in this movie. I think, like, what the that for me, at least. And I think, like, when I think of big daddy, I I actually do get emotion.
There are moments in that movie that He wipes his own ass. Yeah. That whole moment and I felt, you know, and I think, like, yes, that is much more of an adult movie if it's not aimed towards kids. It's PG 13. Yeah.
I don't wanna, like, freak kids out with stuff scary stuff. It's to to the point that I feel like we're both kinda making to a degree, it's it's where The Rock has all these opportunities to engage with Morris Chestnut, where he's like, oh, yeah. The dog he's he's wearing one of those, new doggy supports in the movie cuts. And Morris Chestnut suddenly is on the side of these guys now that are not family men, and his character starts to, like, not make sense to me to a degree because, like practice up Like no. Like talking about Yeah.
No. After after the thing is the nut allergy thing or before maybe. That's the thing. I I start to lose I start to lose, like, track of it, but Joe's watching You're right. She's allergic to them.
That might be it. But The Rock is watching all this film and realizing, oh, I never passed to fucking Morris Chestnut. And Morris Chestnut was there all along just like you wanted him to be. And The Rock's like, tell me what I'm doing wrong. And it's another one of those moments where it just cuts away, and I want to see that conversation.
I want to see these 2 dudes act, and I don't get that. And it's like a bummer to me. I will say I think there's a moment prior to that scene where you're asking about the groundiness. I just wanna say, I think it is the moment in the practice before the big game where they're oh, where the the big man is pushing the, you know, pushing the sled? The the sled.
That's cute. The way they trick her. Could do it. Cute. Yeah.
Yeah. It pulls out and the and the players, and you would like to become part of the team and how much the players all really take to hurt and love her and that she also goes back to what I was saying. I think they kinda have this cool montage with guns and, like, you know, and they're ready for the big game. And it's got the song we never see, and the song's going. Yeah.
We never see the game. And I hate how they fucking have the homeboy trip. I'm like, god. You ruined the moment of homeboy trip. Like, come on.
That was a cool little montage. But, again again, pulling the chair out was like, no. You have a cool little thing. I'm finally feeling the heart of film now. I feel like she's really changed these guys who are all bachelor's and they're however, Morris Chestnut thing to me is really interesting.
I think It has there's no tread on that tire in the end. It's it's important to us. More about The Rock's family than he does his own family. He's he preach a lot about his own family, Never with his own kids. He's he's at her recital.
I've never we don't even see his wife or kids this whole movie. They do next to the car at one point in a parking lot. Yeah. No. He I have a lot of them.
I missed that. That was a But that's the thing. He see he comes off as such a family man, and they wanna make him seem like a family man, and then they throw it away. I'm having a a conspiracy theory about this movie, and I can't prove it. I have no evidence to read, though.
Feel like Morris Chestnut's kinda phoning this in a little bit. And I think the reason why he's phoning it in is I think this movie was supposed to be a Morris Chestnut vehicle. No shit. And I think I think the studio said, hey. Actually, we have the opportunity to have Dwayne the Rock Johnson, but we still you have your we still want you in this movie, and he got relegated.
I'm not I can't prove that. But the way it it feels like he would've been perfect as the main character in this movie. And, also, I feel like he kinda has that. He's little too good slash little too removed from this movie and underused, I think. I agree with you to a point.
I think they fell in love with that little girl, and she's solid in the movie. She's cute. She's super likable. And Morris Chestnut was, like, the perfect supporting, like really strong supporting role. And I think either it got cut back during before something something where it's like they were like, we're gonna prioritize the kid, not the football shit, not the shit of the football players.
No. No. No. You know what it is? It's because Morris Chestnut has his contract.
No So I I just wanna point out This is We woulda thought he had a pop and even put all that. That's just a troll. This is the this is the Joe Rogan version of movie podcasting now? Yeah. Absolutely.
Without random conspiracy No. Pull up pull up the interview. Jamie, pull up the interview from Chuck Knight when he says, no pull it up. Pull it up. This is staying.
This is staying. The only thing that can stay save this podcast episode is this is staying, but also the, like, the cute run to the hospital and the near death experience, like, that's the only thing I think that in the end makes it make sense for him to go on that character journey. Like and of course the nut allergy thing is gonna come back. And of course, like, Peyton was breaking the rules and was, like, on the lam, ran away this whole time. And surprise, her mom is her aunt is her aunt is her mom or whatever for this period of time.
The movie starts to bring me back a little bit, like, where we were talking about the teammates where they all show up at the hospital. They all stand up for the for her. They all bring her stuff to animals. It's like, that shit is super endearing and, like, very cute. But I also am, like, this movie should be done considering so many things.
Well but we have to get to the championship game, Paul. Right. Of course. And they don't for say this. They They do not.
We're not supposed to be saying that. Yeah. Right. The superb owl. The superb owl.
The big game. They've set this up very obviously Mhmm. To show us that he the same play that they run, which is, like, a little, you know, en route in the end zone and his his receiver streaking across the end zone wide open. Every time. Every time.
And he takes he runs it in because no coach at any point told him not to do that to protect your body. That's Joe Kingsman. Okay. You bet. Yeah.
Yeah. It and and then what happened to Cam Newton? Just saying. Joe. Point.
No. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
There's a point in this movie where the coach is very like, Joe, your shoulder's broke. Your ribs are are are pushed in. Your heart's broken. You have 3 concussions broke too. Yeah.
What do you wanna do? Yeah. I don't have my notes anymore. Fuck it. Why does he have the option of going back in the game with I know.
So that's what I'm saying. I did write down during that sequence, where he broke his collarbone or whatever. I was like Separated his shoulder. Is this one of those Doctor Pepper College? Brian Bosworth, where are you?
Playing quarterback. Didn't want this movie. That's why NFL did not wanna sign off on this movie. They they I'm not told, like, we can't The hits were good. Like, so the original we see is okay.
The original script, though, he was like they were like, your head has just been concussed to the point where it has imploded. What do you wanna do? And it's too I wanna play, coach. The 2 is like He's like, me and the 20 bird. I wanna go back out there.
It's fucking So this is the thing, though. It's like he's he's alone again. His daughter has left because he hasn't said you're the thing that matters the most the best thing in my life, and he's alone again. And his existence is empty and fucking worthless. He has nothing to live for, and the power of his daughter's love gives him the ability to move forward and win the fucking big game.
And he's So he got that no chills when No. When when when the daughter shows up in the locker room, it says, turn the lights off, and she's there. He said, Joe, you never quit. You needed me. I had chills.
I kinda had a feeling it was hap gonna happen. Of course, you knew it was gonna happen. Yeah. But it there's satisfying pieces like the football sled and they're not satisfying pee where 2 dudes are pulling it and and it's like their little prank and then there's yeah. Ben, you were saying.
No. It's just one of those things with sports movies in particular, but I think even more so with a family sports movie. There's just you just have to let go a lot because it's in sports movies too, because you you can assume that you're going to watch somebody overcome something to succeed. That's just, like, what you're watching sports movies for. I just have to mention that when I saw and maybe you were there, Charles.
I don't know why. I saw in invincible in the was that Oh, Wahlberg? The Wahlberg. Yeah. And, I saw 'Sup your mom?
Yeah. Hey. I'm Mark Wahlberg. I produced entourage. 'Sup your mother for me.
But the second because if there's no one that that movie's about, he's like a he he's just like a random dude who who tries out for the Vince Papale. When he made the when they're like, we want you on the on the squad, some guy in the theater stood up and went, no way. Holy shit. I think there's just, like, there is a part of, like, what I I hear what both of you are saying because, like, there are versions of this This one's for the Gipper sort of speech that work for me, and this one with the kid is like, I get it. It's supposed to be emotional, but it just becomes kinda saccharin.
Mhmm. There there are PG rated sports movies that fucking rule. The Sandlot, Little Giants. There was another one that I was thinking of. Rookie of the year, Little Big League, Major League 2.
A lot of these are baseball movies. Angels in the outfield. The Natural World. 2 is a kid's movie. It's crazy.
I know. The fact that it's a PG movie is insane, but it's like, executing this is not difficult. And, like, the invincible came out not too far from same time. Yeah. This movie.
And so either way, The Rock loves his daughter and therefore has the strength to win the big game, and there's suddenly a villain in this movie that's not Joe, and it's like a line a a linebacker that shows up for a play and the agent and the burger guy, and they all have, like, 1 or one and a half moments in the whole movie. The king now, Joe. Yeah. Who's the king now, Joe? That I wanted that guy from water boy to play that character.
That would've been awesome. I I also find it weird where he where at the end where he says, I'm gonna go home with my daughter, and then we're going to Disneyland. Like, what a fucking missed opportune. This is a Disney It really was. He could've I mean, a but he should also just took the 25 mil.
He could've done both there. Kinda. Yeah. I know the daughter was like, yo, the kids. But But it's like Man.
The second he buys her her first car Do you remember that? Yeah. She's still gonna say, fuck you, dad. Like, I hate you, you fucking shit. But now he's got extra mouth to feed.
Like, he's he's he's just signed up. And we think aunt Karen, she's making money. She's down in Africa every month. Like, help us. She's not making no money.
She's got she's got 2 more houses to feed and house to feed. Who lets random burger mascots onto the field after? Who who lets fucking random nannies into a closed practice? What the fuck is this? I guess Tom Brady Burger farts.
Farts. If Tom Brady was endorsing some veggie burger, that mascot would be on the field. Yes. That's also true. I wanna go outside.
Absolutely. But wait. We I mean, I guess, curious, Sedgwick is kind of the bad guy throughout the movie. She's kinda hinted at being the bad guy. Yeah.
But they try to make But she's the reason why the kid goes home is, like, she makes the phone call saying how she's gonna ruin Joe's life and Burger farts, man. But also, like, no And then she gets burger. That's karma. At the at the end is the karma. It's her karma.
At the end of her come up and says that she fucking shits her pants. But she gets the name, but she gets the make out she gets the make out kiss. Did you watch She does. Like, so what the fuck? Did you watch the stinger sequence after the credits?
No. She's just on the toilet just screaming. It's her reenacting the Jeff Daniels from Jumbo Dumber. Well, we're at the end of this fucking thing. Way faster than the movie.
Oh my gosh. Way faster. Stay after the credits, everybody. Goddamn it. Wait.
Fun credits. Just wanna know out there. Great credits. Goddamn it. This.
Little dance sequence. Oh, yeah. Okay. Sure. Yeah.
May well, who knows? Maybe there'll be a stinger. But, you know Yeah. Yeah. That's accurate.
Well, here we are. I think we should save Charles for last if Charles is okay with that. I'm done for that. Ben, that means you will go first. I've had a lot of fun talking about this movie, actually.
Good. And I actually do think that there is a level of Fuck you, dad. Reframing that, was actually helpful for me. And so because of that, I think I'm gonna go to 2 burger farts. It's still good.
It's still good. So, like, it's not a movie I'll ever watch again. It's not even a movie that I think I would like, if someone was, like, recommended, like, a a football movie I could watch with my kid, I'd probably like the Little Giants. Yeah. But it's there.
The best of times, probably not. That might be rated r. The Rock has grown a lot as an actor, and I think that, like And a human. And a human. But, like, there are some great rock performances.
We mentioned a few. The rundown Mhmm. Is what is a is a great rock performance. What was that Michael Bay movie he was in with, Marky Marky? Pen and Gain.
Yeah. He was good in that movie. Yeah. Invincible and the game plan come together. The Invincible game plan.
Movie. There you go. About it goes. I can't go to 1.75. We don't play that game.
So I'm gonna stay at a 2 because I do think that there are there's so many moments that are like teehee or fun or interesting. We we also went around a little bit about, like, well, is it a twist at all that that wasn't, that it wasn't known by The Rock or we're not supposed to know that she's on this trip or what like, I think it does that really successfully, and it's got some other, like, little funny parts. And fucking a, the editing is hard in this movie, but I've seen movies that I enjoy the editing a lot less. So, and, apparently, the music is pretty inoffensive because none of us have said anything aside from some of the Elvis things are fun and mister blue sky during the montage is fun. 2.
2 bedazzlers. Look. I have to say there was some moments in that movie where I I think I'd you know, maybe it's just the state of LA right now. I don't know. I don't know what to blame it on.
But where I I felt more than maybe I was expecting to feel. I thought there were some great moments that really because I made a cure of nothing like that. But I was like, oh, that's a kind of a sweet moment or that was a great moment. I think the pacing is definitely a big thing. I think the lack of action slash football games is another kind of a deal breaker.
I enjoy the fact that there is not actually a love interest, I don't think. I know you can make the argument that Rosalyn Sanchez is the love interest, but they don't explore that. Nor do they really explore the idea that family necessarily is the loneliness, but having somebody is. So I thought there was a cool message there. I appreciate it.
Ultimately, yes. I recognize, you know, that 3.2 was probably generous. This conversation has brought me down, particularly. I will say I'm at probably a 2.5, tutus. Bedaffled tutus.
Gotta be. Bikes. 2.5 spikes in bedaffled tutus. Okay. But, no, that's that's that's yes.
Was anyone else when they were driving with, like, a minute 47 down the field and they, like, completed pass across the middle and, like, they're taking their fucking time? Oh, yeah. And the ball teleports? Celebrating? I was like, what?
The ball teleports somehow? Yeah. Hey, Charles. So this was maybe the last time for you. Yeah.
Is that the game plan from here? No more? So the rundown for me, going forward will be to get smarter, on my I can't bring that home. I appreciate walk I'm walking tall tonight. That's what I'm saying.
Like, that's a central intelligence kinda move. I really dig it. I dig it a lot. You went on a rampage there. Yeah.
Yep. Felt like a long time for you. For me, it was a fast five. Don't fuck with it, Charlie. We gotta stop.
Hey. Our bookends are Jamie Henwood. Matthew Foskett does what are we doing and what are we watching? Benjamin? Yes.
